The Firm

D.G. Bevan Insurance Brokers has operated in Barrie since 1978. We have built a strong commercial practice, advising established regional and national businesses on insurance placement and risk management, and an equally well-developed personal lines division serving individuals and families. We are family-run, not owned by a consolidator, and we have grown through long-term client relationships rather than acquisition. Our current team size is in the mid-thirties, and we are targeting a staff of forty by the middle of next year.

The Role

The Controller owns the finance function for the firm and reports directly to the owners.

This is a hands-on position. Finance is a single seat, and the Controller performs the accounting cycle rather than reviewing it. Part-time transactional support may be added as the function develops.

The role has two primary focuses. The first is running the accounting function accurately and on schedule. The second is developing the firm’s financial reporting and analysis: the monthly reporting package, segment profitability, the budget and forecast process, and financial modelling.

Responsibilities

Accounting operations

- Full accounting cycle: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and month-end close
- Reconciliation of premium trust accounts and maintenance of regulatory trust compliance
- Reconciliation of insurer statements, agency-bill and direct-bill commission, and producer commission splits
- Year-end file preparation and liaison with external accountants
- Payroll administration for the full staff, including benefits and group plan administration, records of employment, and year-end T4 reporting
- Statutory remittances and filings, including source deductions and Employer Health Tax

Reporting and analysis





- Development and production of the monthly financial reporting package for the owners, including the underlying schedules and processes required to produce it
- Segment-level profitability reporting
- Annual budget and rolling cash forecast
- Financial modelling of departments

Qualifications

- Experience as the sole finance resource in an organization, or as the second person in a small finance department. This role performs the work rather than directing it.
- A record of building something in a finance function that did not previously exist — a reporting package, a budget process, a costing or compensation model. Candidates should be prepared to discuss one such project in detail.
- Strong financial modelling ability. You can build a model from scratch to answer a specific business question, and defend the assumptions behind it.

CPA designation or equivalent full-cycle accounting experience, advanced Excel, and the ability to explain financial result are all assumed.

Considered an asset

- Experience with trust accounting, premium payables, or producer commission splits
- Public practice experience serving owner-managed businesses
