About Us

Established in 2013, Western’s MPH Program is a 12-month, case-based, and team-based academically rigorous graduate program.

With real public health issues as the foundation of student learning, students will be immersed in some of the most significant and complex public health crises that our country and planet have experienced. Students will learn about public health in a team-based setting where they practice decision-making skills under pressure. The MPH Program has a special focus on public health issues experienced in Southwestern Ontario, First Nations populations across Canada and international populations, this Program will help students foster a special skill set to better understand and assess health problems and develop appropriate solutions for various communities.

Course Information

While management is a process of making decisions about how resources will be generated, developed, allocated, combined and used to pursue intended health service objectives and outcomes, the social context within which it operates prevents cookie cutter solutions. In addition to the primary focus of health systems planning and health care management, students will engage in international comparative analysis of health care funding, delivery and governance across a wide range of health service areas. In the Health Planning module, the students’ understanding of the foundations of various health systems models and designs globally set the stage for developing context specific health objectives and implementation plans.



Topics also include organizing for performance; creating and maintaining healthy work places; developing people for their full potential; and monitoring and managerial control mechanisms. In addition, the course covers decision making processes and criteria, demonstrating adaptive and critical thinking using tools from implementation science and focusing on health equity. The course also covers priority setting, budgeting, human resource and information management. The course includes a module on emergency preparedness and disaster response, using the international incident management system (IMS) standards.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Candidates must have an MSc or PhD in a relevant discipline (or be close to completion). The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of high performance and expertise teaching at the university-level and/or experience in public health. Background and experience in health systems and management is an asset. Expertise in implementation science will also be an asset for teaching this course.
