As part of a growing, dynamic & solution-focused commercial team, the Commercial Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for underwriting conventional commercial mortgages. The underwriter must adhere to established policies and underwriting standards, meeting compliance and control requirements while finding creative and service-oriented solutions in a timely manner to achieve department goals as well as annual target volumes. Additional credit-related and administrative duties are also required such as reporting and pipeline management.
The underwriter also networks with mortgage brokers, partners and other external third parties along with various staff within the Credit & Risk group & other internal departments. Approximately 50% of the day is spent analyzing and underwriting commercial credit facilities for conventional commercial mortgage products, ensuring compliance with company lending guidelines and submitting recommendations for approval. About 30% of the day is dedicated to communication with internal and external contacts to ensure timely processing of transactions and delivery of superior customer service and funding deadlines, including site or drive‑by inspections on a deal‑to‑deal basis. 15% of the day is spent on pipeline review and time management of deal flow to meet prescribed deadlines. 5% of the month is spent on various administration and reporting duties required for the department and company, which are relied upon by Senior Management.
Proficient underwriting skills with a minimum of 2 years of commercial mortgage or SFR underwriting experience. Demonstrated service excellence within the field. Post‑secondary education (diploma or degree) preferred, preferably in business or finance.
Good working knowledge of MS Office (primarily Word and Excel). Robust business sense combined with sound technical knowledge of secured lending and factors affecting the commercial mortgage market. Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
Ability to handle multiple competing priorities while providing optimal customer service. Access to a vehicle for site inspections. Commercial mortgage applications can be complex, requiring creative and innovative thinking and proactive problem‑solving.
