About the Project:

The Biodiversity Governance Innovation Programme (BioGov) project is a five-year (2025-2029), Global Affairs Canada-funded initiative implemented by Alinea International. It supports the Government of Suriname to strengthen inclusive, coordinated, and gender-responsive biodiversity governance, with a focus on marine and coastal ecosystems. Working closely with national ministries, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, and civil society, BioGov helps operationalize Suriname's 2024-2035 National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan

About the Assignment:

The BioGov Project is advancing efforts to strengthen biodiversity governance and support countries in meeting their commitments under biodiversity-related multilateral environmental agreements (B-MEAs). As the project expands its implementation activities, there is a growing need for research, policy analysis, and technical support to inform project interventions and contribute to evidence-based decision-making.

This internship provides a unique opportunity for a student or early-career professional interested in environmental policy, biodiversity governance, international development, and public policy research. The assignment is designed to build practical experience in legal and policy analysis, desk-based research, project coordination, and donor-funded project implementation.

Working closely with the Project Director and other members of the BioGov team, the Intern will contribute to research and analysis related to biodiversity governance frameworks, localization obligations under key biodiversity-related agreements, and opportunities for policy and regulatory reform. The Intern will also support project management functions, including meeting coordination, documentation, reporting, and the preparation of donor deliverables.

Through this assignment,



the Intern will gain hands-on experience in comparative policy research, stakeholder engagement, project administration, and results-based project management. The role offers exposure to regional and international biodiversity policy processes and provides an opportunity to contribute directly to initiatives aimed at strengthening national biodiversity governance systems and advancing implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and related commitments.

This position is particularly well suited for individuals who are analytical, detail-oriented, and motivated to contribute to meaningful environmental and sustainable development outcomes while building practical professional experience in an international project setting.

Duties:

The Intern will

- Review key project documents to gain a strong understanding of the project's anticipated results, implementation strategies, monitoring framework, and partnerships.
- Undertake desk background research on the identification and prioritization of localization obligations under key B‑MEAs and national biodiversity policies, and compiling relevant policy/regulatory information.
- Undertake a comparative review of applicable regional and international examples of legal, regulatory and policy frameworks and make recommendations re. reforms (alignment with Kumming etc) that address the needs of ITPs and adaptation to local context.
- Participate in project meetings and activities through hybrid or remote platforms, providing logistical support and contributing to documentation (e.g., note-taking and follow-up actions).
- Contribute to donor-facing processes by supporting the preparation and review of key deliverables, including semi-annual operations reports and final results reports.
- Assist the Field Project Manager with additional ad hoc tasks as required.

Educational Background:

- An undergraduate degree in sociology, biology, environment, biodiversity and conservation, international affairs, or related field is required.
- Enrolment in a Master's program or Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
- The intern must have computer skills with MS Office PowerPoint, Word and other relevant packages.
- They must have strong communication, writing, and interpersonal skills.
- They must be fluent in English.
