Community Health

Workers are a core part of our communities as caregivers and make a significant impact on the quality of life of their clients and patients. Work under the direction of the Supervisor/Coordinator/Manager or delegate to provide home support services to clients. Assist clients with varied levels of care, observe, and report significant changes in the client’s presentation.

Collaborate with the health care team, clients and their caregivers to maximize independence with activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). Motivate, encourage, and involve clients in their care. Provide input and feedback in the care planning process to the health care team.

The community is the end of a long, magnificent fjord on the mainland coast of British Columbia.

Bella Coola General

Hospital has 10 acute beds, 5 long‑term care beds, and a 3‑bed emergency department open 24/7, along with a laboratory, diagnostic imaging services, Telehealth, Mental Health, Public Health, Home & Community Support Services. The hospital also offers a medical clinic and a pharmacy. Graduation from a recognized Health Care Assistant Program. Current/Active Registration with BC Community Health Worker and Care Aide Registry.

Experience interacting with persons with dementia, geriatric and/or palliative populations is an asset. Must have a valid BC Driver’s license and access to a vehicle, as local area travel may be required. Basic knowledge of client‑centered care and promoting independence.

Knowledge and ability to operate mechanical lifts, following safe work procedures.



Knowledge in workplace violence prevention including personal safety techniques. Knowledge of patient‑centered care with people with dementia.

Basic technology literacy and ability to operate a computerized client care information system and cellular phone. paper and/or electronic chart, telephone and in‑person). Basic knowledge of self‑care and motivational support. Demonstrated ability to apply culturally safe and competent care, including when working with Indigenous peoples.

Ability to take direction from the health care team and clients. Successful applicants may be required to complete a Criminal Records Review Check. As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly‑funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections.

Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For current hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, this information will be requested as part of the onboarding process.
