Beta-Calco is currently looking for a Design Engineer to join our team. You will be working out of our head office located at 1400 Whitehorse Road, Toronto, Ontario, M3J 3A7.

Job Overview
Reporting to the Design Engineer Team Lead of the Innovation/Production Engineering Team, the Design Engineer will be responsible for creating 3D part models and assemblies; maintaining the Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawings and all related materials for a range of products, as well as seeking ways to improve products and their components, while collaborating with customer service, purchasing and assembly teams on design projects. This role will also include analyzing existing products with a view to improving their design and overall performance. In addition, the Design Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that the products can be manufactured and assembled cost effectively and efficiently.
In this role, the Design Engineer will work closely with the Design Engineer Team Lead and other members of the Innovation/Production team to ensure products are developed in line with company design vision and goals.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Create and update 3D models using the best design practices to achieve assembly efficiency and cost effectiveness.
- Prepare well structured Bills of Materials (BOMs) in Infor (ERP system) for standard, modified, and custom products.
- Apply basic programming skills (e.g., C, VBA, Excel macros,
or similar) and logical thinking to support automation of BOM creation and product configuration, including adaptation to tools like Infor CPQ Design Studio.
- Provide technical assistance to Production, Assembly, QC and Customer Service departments.
- Maintain up to date accurate drawings in the PDM system and use ECOs to execute changes as required.
- Improve and refine product designs to decrease production costs and improve product component commonality.
- Create quote drawings based on customer requirements.
- Create fully engineered custom products based on customer requirements.
- Perform product testing on current product variants for custom and modified products.
- Check and approve new parts for quality and accuracy.
- Determine which existing components can be used in new designs.
- Liaise with the internal production & fabrication teams to ensure that components can be efficiently manufactured.
- Liaise with the assembly team to ensure that fixtures are designed to facilitate efficient assembly.
- Ensure that all products are designed and manufactured to comply with CSA, UL, ETL or CE certification requirements.
- Generate easy and cost effective solutions to engineering problems as they arise.
- Create wiring diagrams, assembly and installation instructions for products and ensure such diagrams are available for all orders prior to reaching final assembly.
- Keep up to date with industry trends (both technical and aesthetic) by reading industry publications, websites, etc.
- Perform other duties as required by the Design Engineer Team Lead.
Qualifications
- Post secondary degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Design from an accredited university/college with a minimum of 3 years of mechanical engineering experience. Previous experience in the lighting industry is an asset.
- Experience in applying basic programming skills (e.g., C, VBA, Excel macros, or similar) mentioned above for BOM creation and automation is an asset.
- Previous design experience with electro-mechanical assemblies and electronic enclosures is an asset.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks PDM.
- Proficient design knowledge with materials and processes such as: sheet metal, aluminum extrusion, metal casting, injection molding, etc.
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes.
- Excellent organization and time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
- Accurate and precise with high attention to detail.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.

Compensation
We offer a generous compensation package, which includes:
- Salary: $65,000 - $75,000 per per annum (commensurate with experience), based on a standard 40-hour work week.
