Director, Finance

About the Opportunity

As CKUA gears up to celebrate 100 years of music, storytelling, and community, we’re looking for a Director, Finance who’s ready to lead with heart, strategy, and a healthy appreciation for spreadsheets and soundchecks.

This is a finance leadership role where purpose, creativity, and connection are just as important as precision. Yes, there are budgets, forecasts, and year-end reporting. But there's also a 100-year-old radio station with a unique history that plays everything from Alberta-made folk to deep-cut jazz.

You'll be an integral part of the Leadership Team, lead a thoughtful finance team, and take the lead on getting the most out of the financial systems we rely on every day. This is a hands-on role. You'll be working directly in the numbers day to day. How You’ll Make an Impact

You'll guide all things finance, budgets, forecasts, payroll processing, reporting, and internal controls, with direct, hands-on ownership. You'll be in the numbers alongside your team just as often as you're presenting them to the Board. You'll also prepare and review the regulatory filings we're required to submit, including CRA, StatsCan, CRTC, and OSFI, and support our funders, our Board, and our mission with clarity and care.

You'll take the lead on risk management for the organization, working across departments to identify risks, building out mitigation strategies, and keeping our risk register current. You'll also review key contracts to make sure they line up with our budgets, insurance, and policies.

You'll bring a people-first approach to the numbers, helping teams understand how financial data supports their work, whether they're applying for a grant, organizing a fundraising campaign, or planning for what's next. You'll guide grant and donor-related reporting, ensure donation revenue is recorded and receipted accurately, and serve as CKUA's Privacy Officer, balancing trust, compliance, and transparency in all directions.

Your voice will be at the table helping shape CKUA's long-term planning, and you'll get hands-on with the systems we use every day, think QuickBooks Online and ADP Workforce, configuring, troubleshooting, and optimizing them, always working closely with the teams who use them so changes might make their jobs easier.



You'll also lead and mentor a small team and bring curiosity and collaboration into every conversation.

What You Bring

You're a finance leader who brings both sharp thinking and a steady hand. You've worked through audits, built forecasts, managed teams successfully, and turned complex data into clear insight, all while keeping the big picture in view. You bring hands-on experience in financial operations, ideally within a nonprofit, public-sector, or purpose-driven environment. A CPA designation is a considered an asset here, but it's not a requirement.

On the education side, we're looking for a degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or a related field, and we're just as open to an equivalent mix of education and lived experience. You've got somewhere in the range of 8 to 10 years of progressive financial experience, including at least 4 years leading a team. And you're comfortable getting into the weeds of QuickBooks Online and ADP Workforce, or similar platforms.





You're comfortable collaborating with and advising senior leaders and Boards, and you know how to communicate so others can easily understand. You think about the impact of process and system changes on the people who live with them every day, and you know how to bring people along through change.

You're someone who can calculate the ROI but can see beyond it. You believe in impact, whether that's giving a department lead a clearer picture of where their budget stands, getting month-end numbers into people's hands faster, or making sure the people of CKUA get paid accurately and on time. You see finance as being in service to the rest of the organization, and you enjoy mentoring others and building strong working relationships across departments.

Additional Information

This is a full time position based in CKUA’s downtown Edmonton office, located in the historic Alberta Hotel and offering a hybrid working environment. We anticipate this role to provide a starting salary of approximately $110,000 per year, with the final amount determined by experience and the available budget. CKUA provides more than just a paycheque, offering a creative, community-focused workplace and a supportive benefits program.
