About The Opportunity The Dalhousie University Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures seeks applications for a full time probationary Instructor in German language and German studies, effective July 1, 2027. The position is subject to budgetary approval. The Instructor will primarily teach German language courses at all levels, as well as courses in the German Studies program.

These are courses typically taught in English and cross-listed to also serve other programs in the department or faculty, on topics such as Confronting Fascism, Monsters & Madness (German Expressionist Film), German Romanticism, Modern German Drama, or Modern German Philosophy.

This appointment supports the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures move toward a more integrated model of language teaching and learning and offers an opportunity to contribute to shared curriculum practices and student-centered initiatives during a period of program renewal and growth. The workload is equivalent to eight 3-credit hour courses during the one-year period, which would occasionally include two 3-credit courses taught in the summer term.

Qualifications for the Position

- Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in German studies (which could include comparative linguistics/literature/cultural studies/philosophy or related interdisciplinary fields) and a strong record of teaching German language classes.




- The ideal candidate will be able to invigorate course offerings and attract students to the program, building bridges between our curriculum and other programs at Dalhousie/King’s.
- Native or native-equivalent command of German and English, as well as extensive expertise in teaching the German language at the undergraduate level, are required.
- The successful candidate will possess strong organizational and administrative skills, and a commitment to fostering student engagement.
- Experience teaching in North American or European institutions will be considered an asset, as well as expertise in teaching German online.
