Heavy Duty Mechanic
Public Works Outside Worker (Approximate 3-4 Month Term – Temporary Full-Time)
The Township of Spallumcheen is seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to support the Township’s Public Works team on a temporary basis for a term commencing September 3, 2026 (or as soon as possible thereafter) until December 31, 2026 or until the incumbent employee returns from leave, whichever occurs first. Reporting to the Public Works Foreman, the Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, and servicing of municipal vehicles and heavy equipment. The successful candidate will help ensure the secure and reliable operation of the Township's fleet through preventative maintenance, repairs, welding and fabrication work, and accurate maintenance record keeping.
This position is covered by the current Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Collective Agreement, Local 2709.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of municipal vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled servicing.
- Complete welding and fabrication work as required.
- Coordinate fleet servicing and repairs with external contractors.
- Maintain service, maintenance, and inspection records.
- Order parts and materials required for repairs and maintenance.
- Monitor and communicate vehicle and equipment readiness.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized shop environment.
- Safely operate vehicles, equipment, and tools.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 education.
- BC Certified Journeyman Certificate as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic.
- Valid Class 3 BC Driver's Licence with Air Brake Endorsement.
- Minimum three (3) years' experience as a mechanic.
- Class C Welding Ticket.
- Level 1 First Aid Certificate.
- WHMIS Training.
Compensation
- $42.05 per hour (2025 rate) as per the CUPE Collective Agreement
- 16% in lieu of benefits as per Article 23.03 (a) of the Collective Agreement.
