Course Description: This course provides an overview of the history of the Ottoman Empire, the longest lasting Muslim superpower and a major player in world history, from its inception in 1299 until its dissolution after World I. Among current members of the United Nations, close to 40 member states were, for periods ranging from 50 to 600 years, integral parts of the Ottoman state. Present‑day conflicts in political hot‑spots, such as the Middle East, Bosnia, Kosovo, Cyprus and the Caucasus can only be understood through exploring their origin in the Ottoman past.

At the same time in many cases the Ottoman Empire was an example of tolerance and accommodation of various ethnic and religious groups.

Class Schedule : Mondays, 3:00-5:00

Hours of Work: Mondays, 5:00-8:00

Sessional Dates of Appointment : September 1, 2026 - December 31, 2026

Salary : $54.27 per hour

Qualifications : Applicants should have a completed PhD or (for non‑U. of T. graduate students) equivalent, with major field in the relevant topic area. Demonstrated effectiveness as a teaching assistant, academic qualifications in the subject,



ability to introduce students to a diverse range of approaches, and suitability for the position.

Description of Duties : Duties may include the teaching of small tutorial sections, marking of assignments, holding scheduled office hours and invigilation of exams; other duties as determined by the supervisor.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.
