Health PEI - Licensed Practical Nurse, Long Term Care A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a regulated health care professional who provides practical nursing services for the purposes of treating health conditions, promoting health, preventing illness and assisting individuals, families/partner in care, to achieve an optimal state of health.

LPNs working within Health PEI, take direction from a registered nurse or a duly qualified medical practitioner either orally or in writing, including telephone or electronic transmission.

They collaborate with other health care providers as a member of the clients-care team providing health care across the continuum of care. They function autonomously and are accountable professionals for all acts or omissions undertaken or occurring within the scope of their practice. The LPN provides nursing services for clients considered stable with predictable outcomes using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation.

The LPNs is responsible for developing and maintaining their own professional competency, respecting the shared and unique competencies of other members of the health care team. The LPN provides holistic client-centred care, taking into consideration the client’s physical, emotional, spiritual and psychological health needs. The LPN participates in the accreditation process, and they participate in implementing strategic projects that improve care delivery to Islanders.

LPNs reports to a variety of leadership positions. LPNs adhere to Health PEI policies, procedures, guideline and Medical Directives. The LPN practices according to the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of PEI Code of Ethics and Standards for Licensed Practical Nursing.





Duties:

- Administer medications, including oral, subcutaneous and inter-muscular injections.
- Manage and use monitoring equipment, recognizing abnormal results and seeking appropriate support and assistance when caring for the client, recognizing when it is beyond their scope.
- Perform venipunctures when required.
- Change IV solution bags (non-medicated).
- Practice according to Medication Administration Standards (Practice Directive – College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Prince Edward Island).
- Administers medications for stable patients with predictable outcomes according to Health PEI policies, procedures, and guidelines, with an understanding of the indications, side effects and related nursing concerns and actions, inclusive of solving order discrepancies.
- Complete and sign for narcotic counts where and when required.
- Complete independent double checks of high alert medication as one of two nursing professionals where required.
- Complete client health assessments, which include a comprehensive head to toe physical assessment using observation, interviewing, inspection, palpitation and auscultation.
- Use critical thinking skills and demonstrate a greater use of autonomy in practice.
- Delegate to and guide, Patient Care Workers (PCW), Resident Care Workers (RCW),



Graduate LPNs and LPN or PCW/RCW students.
- Provide and integrate the concepts of client’s care team as well updating clients, families and partners in care on an ongoing basis.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Active or eligible for registration with the Prince Edward Island College of Nursing & Midwifery.
- Demonstrated application of knowledge of client’s physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual needs, which includes clients with chronic illnesses.
- Demonstrated an alignment with health PEIs mission, vision and values, including honesty, integrity in personal and professional behaviour.
- Be capable of sustained physical activity.
- Must have a good previous work and attendance record.
- Current in CPR/BCLS, TLR, WHIMIS All Hazards Codes, and annual re-certifications, required.
- Demonstrated a skilled presence and model behaviour.
- Knowledge of chronic illnesses is required.
- Must be able to work well independently and under supervision.
- Ability to work as a member of the clients care team (interdisciplinary team), requesting and accepting direction as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Demonstrate effective time management and organizational skills.
- Able to provide physical, psychosocial, emotional and spiritual care to the client being cared for.

Other Qualifications:

- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.

Salary Range: $32.42 - $38.67 per hour (Level LPN)

Hours: Full Time, Part Time, Casual
