Description The Department of Grounds and Roads within the Facilities Management is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Mechanic.

Operations & Maintenance, as a part of Facilities Management, is responsible to ensure that building structures and systems for all University owned and leased properties are operated and maintained in a reliable, efficient and cost effective manner to ensure a safe and comfortable work environment in which campus users can carry out their activities.

The Motor Pool is a primary facility for service and repairs of all owned and leased University vehicles and trailers, as well as some off-road equipment. The Mechanic, Motor Pool reports to the Manager, Fleet Operations. Work is performed under minimal supervision.

This position is a part of the AUPE Collective Bargaining Unit. The normal shift is 7.5 hours per day, five days per week, usually Monday through Friday, however, transfers to other shifts, with notice, is a possibility. Compressed work weeks may be necessary in peak times in order to assist with large workloads. Callouts to the campus can also be expected during emergencies.

This position may require work to be carried out with the following conditions: using lifts of heights up to 4 metres, heavy lifting, year round indoor and outdoor responsibilities, possible exposure to carbon monoxide fumes and various shop related chemicals. This is a hands on job which is sometimes noisy and dirty, and there is some risk of injury involved in working with power tools and near exhaust gases.

Primary Purpose of the Position (key purpose, functions, roles):

- The Mechanic, Motor Pool is responsible for the daily operations of the Motor Pool. The operational requirements include performing routine services and repairs for the University Fleet, which is made up of on-road vehicles, off-road mobile equipment, and trailers.
- Diagnosing, testing and repairing: engines, steering systems, braking systems, drive trains, suspensions, electrical systems and air-conditioning systems.
- Purchasing services from reliable, reputable companies for any repair work which the Motor Pool shop is not equipped to service.
- Organizing and scheduling of vehicle, off-road equipment and trailer maintenance/repairs through contact with campus vehicle users.
- Ensuring that Motor Pool records are properly maintained according to processes, policies and procedures of the University of Calgary Facilities department, following University guidelines.
- Cooperating and coordinating work with other Facilities Management units and the U of C departments.
- Other job related duties as required.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Ensures the work assigned is completed as required and is in compliance with the University specifications, standards and procedures.
- Responsible to become familiar with all existing University structures and systems, as well as acquire knowledge of recent trends, techniques, codes and equipment as they become relevant to the operation of the University.
- Ensures that equipment, workspaces,



and tools supplied by the University are used for their intended purposes, and are maintained in a safe working order.
- Manages own time effectively and ensures immediate supervisor is kept informed of activities, and progress of work.
- Pleasantly and respectfully interacts with co-workers, supervisors, contractors, consultants, suppliers, students and other members of the University community.
- Discretion, confidentiality, and attention to detail are required attributes.
- Is willing to learn and adapt to change and is expected to actively participate in own training and development in coordination with the department.
- Meets all ongoing OHS initiatives, follows University OHS policies, procedures and OHS Legislation as required ensuring personal, public and co-worker safety when completing tasks or engaging in potentially hazardous situations.
- Is familiar with the University of Calgary "Statement on Principles of Conduct" and conducts himself/herself according to these principles in all situations when acting on behalf of the University of Calgary.
- Ensures regular work attendance and timely reporting for start of shift.
- Ensures that personal hygiene, attire and grooming are appropriate for the work environment.

Qualifications / Requirements

- Must have Alberta Automotive Service Technician Journeyman Certificate or equivalent.
- Must have 3-5 years of experience.
- Must be competent with the use of vehicle diagnostic equipment.
- Must be willing and able to perform hands on jobs which are sometimes noisy, dirty, and imply risk of injury involved in working with power tools and near exhaust gases.
- Must be willing and able to lift between 11 and 25 kilograms.
- Must be comfortable working in a team-based environment, as well as working individually, with minimal supervision.
- Must be able to assess and solve problems, or to request assistance to solve an issue before it escalates.
- Must be able to verbally present ideas, problems and solutions clearly and concisely.
- Must have a desire to learn and upgrade technical skills.
- Must be able to manage own time effectively.
- Must have an intermediate level of computer skills and be able to navigate MS Suite, Excel, as well as online vehicle diagnostic & repair manuals.
- Must hold a valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
