Calgary Couples Counselling Centre
Calgary
Calgary Couples Counselling Centre is seeking a Registered Psychologist or Registered Provisional Psychologist who wants to develop genuine expertise in couples therapy.
Calgary Couples Counselling Centre
Suite 200, 1209 – 59 Ave SE
Calgary, Alberta
There are many places where an early-career psychologist can begin building a private-practice caseload. We want to offer something more.
Calgary Couples Counselling Centre is looking for a psychologist who is genuinely interested in becoming an excellent couples therapist—and who wants to join a clinical environment where learning, consultation, feedback, and professional development are part of the culture.
We are looking for someone who is curious, motivated, clinically thoughtful, open to feedback, and excited about developing expertise in working with couples and relationships.
We are open to both Registered Psychologists and Registered Provisional Psychologists. For the right provisional or early-career Registered Psychologist, we see this as an opportunity not simply to fill a caseload, but to develop a specialization and build a long-term professional home.
Who We're Looking For The strongest candidate will be someone who:
-Has a genuine interest in couples, relationships, attachment, emotion, and interpersonal dynamics
-Wants to become highly skilled at couples therapy rather than simply adding couples to a general counselling caseload
-Is curious about what happens in the therapy room and continually asks, How could I do this better?
-Welcomes thoughtful feedback, consultation, and opportunities to refine their clinical work
-Takes initiative and responsibility for their own professional development
-Is willing to stretch beyond what already feels comfortable
-Values high clinical standards while remaining warm, humble, and collaborative
-Wants to become part of a professional community rather than simply rent space or receive referrals
-Is interested in developing a meaningful caseload and a longer-term relationship with a practice
Previous couples-therapy experience or training in approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy or the Gottman Method is certainly an asset—but potential and motivation are important to us as well.
A strong clinician who has primarily worked with individuals but is serious about developing expertise in couples therapy is encouraged to apply.
A Place to Learn Couples Therapy
Couples therapy is difficult work. It requires more than learning a model or completing a weekend workshop. Therapists must learn to manage two therapeutic alliances simultaneously, recognize relationship patterns as they unfold, regulate escalating interactions, work beneath anger and defensiveness, facilitate emotional depth, maintain session leadership, and help partners actually interact differently with one another.
Those abilities develop through deliberate practice over time.
At Calgary Couples Counselling Centre, therapist development is an important part of what we do.
Our associates participate in ongoing clinical training and consultation focused specifically on the challenges of doing excellent couples therapy. Our internal training currently includes areas such as:
-Leading and structuring difficult couples sessions
-Recognizing and interrupting escalation
-Maintaining a balanced alliance with both partners
-Mapping negative interactional cycles and relationship patterns
-Working with underlying emotion, attachment, and vulnerability
-Moving beyond discussion into experiential therapeutic work
-Helping partners balance individual responsibility with relational understanding
-Recognizing, creating, and deepening meaningful moments of change
Our approach draws from established couples-therapy traditions—including Emotionally Focused Therapy, Gottman-informed work, differentiation-based approaches, and other evidence-informed relationship interventions—while emphasizing the clinical capacities therapists need in the room regardless of theoretical orientation.
What You'll Do
As an associate who is an Independent Contractor, you will:
-Provide couples therapy as an important part of your clinical caseload
-Also work with individual clients where appropriate
-Develop increasing competence and confidence with complex relationship presentations
-Participate in clinical consultation, training, and peer learning
-Maintain professional and ethical clinical documentation
-Develop your own clinical judgment and therapeutic style
-Contribute to a collaborative and supportive clinical culture
As your experience develops, there may also be opportunities to develop additional areas of specialization that complement relationship work, such as trauma, sexuality and intimacy, infidelity and betrayal, addictions, parenting, blended families, mental health issues, or other areas that genuinely interest you.
What We Provide
Building a private practice alone requires clinicians to become therapists, marketers, administrators, receptionists, bill collectors, website managers, and business owners all at once.
We want our clinicians to be able to put more of their energy into becoming excellent therapists.
Our associates benefit from
-An established Calgary practice specializing in couples and relationship therapy
-A steady organizational investment in generating new-client referrals
-Administrative and reception support
-Furnished professional offices
-Established practice-management systems
-Clinical consultation and peer support
-Ongoing in-house professional development
-Colleagues who are available to discuss difficult cases and clinical questions
-Considerable autonomy in managing your schedule and clinical work
-Opportunities to develop a recognizable area of skilled expertise
-A practice culture that takes both clinical excellence and collegial relationships seriously.
Our office is located in southeast Calgary in a skilled building with bright, updated offices and substantial natural light.
For Provisional and Early-Career Psychologists
We are particularly interested in hearing from strong provisional and early-career Registered Psychologists who already have solid clinical foundations and want to continue developing their skills and expertise.
You may already have meaningful counselling experience but still be relatively early in your work with couples. Or perhaps you've recently become registered and are looking for a practice where continued learning and clinical development remain an important part of your professional life.
We're looking for clinicians who are thoughtful about their work, eager to learn, receptive to feedback, willing to stretch themselves clinically, and serious about becoming increasingly capable of handling the complexity and intensity of couples therapy.
For provisional psychologists, we also recognize that the provisional period can be an especially important period of professional development. Supervision arrangements and availability will be discussed with provisional candidates as part of the application process.
What This Position Is Not
This probably isn't the right position if you are primarily looking for somewhere to pick up a small number of occasional clients.
We are not trying to build the largest possible roster of therapists.
We are interested in developing long-term relationships with clinicians who want to grow with the practice, become excellent at what they do, and make a meaningful contribution to the people they serve and the colleagues around them.
Compensation and Caseload
Associates are compensated on a percentage basis, with compensation determined by factors including experience, registration status, and caseload.
We are open to discussing different starting caseloads, but preference will be given to candidates who want to develop a substantial and sustainable practice over time.
Some evening availability is important, particularly while establishing a caseload, because this is when many couples seek appointments.
Specific expectations, compensation structure, supervision arrangements where applicable, and opportunities for growth will be discussed transparently during the interview process.
About Calgary Couples Counselling Centre
Calgary Couples Counselling Centre is an established Calgary psychology practice with a particular focus on couples, relationships, and strengthening connection.
We believe excellent couples therapy requires therapists who never stop developing.
That means creating a clinic where clinicians can maintain professional autonomy while also having colleagues around them who care about providing quality care: people with whom they can discuss difficult sessions, learn new approaches, examine what isn't working, celebrate breakthroughs, and continue getting better.
If that sounds like the kind of therapist you want to become, we'd like to meet you.
