Job Title: Senior Backend Engineer - Node.js, Java & Kafka

Location: 100% Remote, Canada

Job Type: T4 Contract

Experience: 7-10 Years

Rate: CAD 70 to 80 per hour

Role Overview

We are looking for a strong Senior Backend Engineer with recent, hands-on production experience in Node.js, Java, TypeScript, Apache Kafka, Splunk, AWS, REST APIs, and microservices.

This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong backend development, system design, production troubleshooting, and technical leadership.

Candidates must have recent, hands-on production experience with Node.js, Java, Apache Kafka, and Splunk.

Key Responsibilities

- Design and develop scalable backend services using Node.js, TypeScript, and Java.
- Build and secure REST APIs for internal and external consumption.
- Design and develop microservices and distributed systems.
- Build and support Kafka-based event-driven applications.
- Develop and operate cloud-native applications on AWS.
- Use Splunk for monitoring, log analysis, troubleshooting, incident investigation, and root-cause analysis.
- Participate in system design and make technical trade-offs across scalability, performance, security, reliability, and cost.
- Contribute to automated testing, CI/CD, production support, and application reliability.
- Provide technical guidance and collaborate with engineering, DevOps, SRE, security, QA, and product teams.

- 7-10 years of software engineering experience

- AWS / cloud-native development
- System design and architecture
- SQL and NoSQL databases
- Production troubleshooting and root-cause analysis
- Experience leading technical solutions across interconnected systems and platforms

Preferred Skills

- Spring Boot / Spring Framework
- Dynatrace and/or New Relic
- Docker / Kubernetes
- CI/CD
- Terraform / Infrastructure as Code
- OpenTelemetry / Grafana / Prometheus
- SRE / observability practices
- Experience with contemporary AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent

This is primarily a hands-on individual contributor role with technical leadership responsibilities.
