This position is responsible for troubleshooting, improving, and maintaining PLC, HMI, robotic, welding, safety, and data collection systems to support production uptime, quality, safety, and continuous improvement. This position will act as a technical escalation resource for complex equipment issues, support recent technology implementation, and help standardize controls practices across the plant.
University and/or technical college diploma/degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, Automation, Controls, Electro-Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field with the following experience: Minimum 5 – 10 years of controls, automation, robotics, welding, and manufacturing support experience in the automotive industry. Strong troubleshooting experience with automated assembly lines, presses, projection welding, MIG welding, resistance welding, robotic cells, conveyors, safety circuits, sensors, vision systems, and related manufacturing equipment. Strong knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs, including ControlLogix/CompactLogix platforms, Studio 5000, ladder logic, I/O troubleshooting, online diagnostics, program backups, and change control.
Strong robot troubleshooting and programming skills, including robot recovery, collision troubleshooting, I/O interface, weld interface, and cycle optimization.
Strong understanding of industrial networks and communication protocols, including Ethernet/IP, managed switches, machine networks, PLC-to-PLC communication, and device-level troubleshooting. Knowledge of machine safety systems, safety PLCs, safety relays, light curtains, gate interlocks, E-stops, safety circuits, and LOTO requirements.
Experience supporting plant-floor data collection systems, including downtime tracking, cycle time monitoring, production reporting, OPC-UA, Ignition, SQL, Power BI, or similar systems is an asset. Provide advanced controls and automation support for production equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, robotics, welding systems, sensors, safety systems, servo systems, VFDs, and industrial networks. ~ Act as a technical escalation resource for complex downtime issues when additional support is required beyond frontline production and maintenance troubleshooting. ~ Troubleshoot process and equipment-related controls issues, identify root cause, implement containment actions, and develop permanent corrective actions to prevent recurrence. ~ Support automated welding assembly lines, robotic cells, presses, projection welding, MIG welding, resistance welding, material handling systems, and related production equipment. ~ Review, modify, and improve PLC and HMI programs to support equipment reliability, safety, quality, cycle time, error proofing, and production performance. ~ Support Fanuc robot troubleshooting, program adjustments, recovery methods, collision prevention logic, weld interface troubleshooting, and robotic cycle optimization. ~ Develop and maintain controls documentation, including PLC backups, HMI backups, robot backups, electrical drawings, change logs, control narratives, network layouts, and troubleshooting procedures. ~ Support the implementation and improvement of plant-floor data collection systems, including downtime tracking, cycle time monitoring, operator response systems, forklift/material tracking, and production visibility tools. ~ Work with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, Quality, Toolroom, IT/OT,
and external integrators to support equipment improvements, new technology implementation, and technical problem solving. ~ Support equipment launches, relocations, upgrades, decommissions, and special projects by ensuring controls standards, machine safety, PLC/HMI functionality, and production readiness are achieved. ~ Develop and provide guidance for error proofing and controls-based improvements to reduce quality defects, machine faults, downtime, scrap, rework, and unsafe conditions. ~ Alert Management of potential risk factors associated with controls systems, equipment reliability, safety circuits, automation processes, and recommend temporary and/or permanent solutions to minimize risk. ~ Lead or support root cause analysis, 8D problem solving, lessons learned, and continuous improvement activities related to equipment controls, automation, robotics, and production losses. ~ Maintain current knowledge of controls technology, robotics, industrial networks, data collection systems, machine safety, and manufacturing automation through training, suppliers, trade shows, and industry research. ~ Support Engineering and Quality Teams in the development and improvement of process documentation, control plans, equipment standards, and manufacturing controls requirements. ~ Review processing methods and provide continuous development of automation and controls techniques that will improve in-house capabilities. ~ Provide technical guidance to Maintenance Technicians, Tech Leads, Controls Technicians, and production support teams as required. ~ Ensure good housekeeping for the department and work area is tidy and organized at all times. ~ Both office setting and production environment ~40% office, 60% plant floor (PPE required) ~ Flexible hours as required Ability to work on computer for long periods of time Must work in accordance with health and safety regulations, company rules, plant rules, policies and procedures All employees are prohibited from walking under a suspended hoist, cranes or forklifts.
