Reporting to the Deputy Public Trustee, the Senior Public Trustee Officer performs investigative, analytical, technical, bookkeeping and financial management, legal support, case management, and communications functions within the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT). The position supports the administration of estates and trusts and works closely with families, represented persons, legal and financial institutions, and community organizations across Nunavut.

The Senior Public Trustee

Officer manages financial and legal matters on behalf of individuals requiring a substitute decision maker, communicates complex financial and legal requirements to members of the public, and assists in ensuring estates and trusts are administered in accordance with Nunavut legislation.

Responsibilities

The Senior Public Trustee Officer’s main responsibilities are, but are not limited to:

- Acts as a Notary Public, prepares court and land title documents, performs searches at legal registries and the Nunavut Court wills registry, and investigates and locates assets and liabilities of estates and trusts and the property of represented persons
- Organizes disbursements and receipts for estates and trusts to creditors and beneficiaries, including writing cheques
- Assists the Deputy Public Trustee, the Public Guardian, and Trustee in ensuring the orderly administration of estates and trusts pursuant to Nunavut legislation
- Investigates familial relationships, determines assets and outstanding liabilities, pays debts of estates and trusts, and transfers remaining property to the rightful beneficiaries
- Properly prepares and completes Income Tax and Estate Tax returns and handles other CRA related matters
- Prepares and completes legal documents and correspondence and provides support and legal assistance to the Public Guardian and Trustee and/or Legal Counsel




- Communicates regularly with beneficiaries and members of the public regarding the role of the Public Trustee, legal requirements for estate administration, and ongoing estate files
- Tracks and organizes document flow and archiving in the office in accordance with established file and document tracking, maintenance and archiving standards

Qualifications

Typically, the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position would be attained through:
- A high school diploma; and
- Three (3) years of experience in a secretarial, clerical, bookkeeping, administrative or related field.

Legal, financial administration, or paralegal experience is considered an asset. The ability to speak and write in Inuktitut is also considered an asset. The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
