Calgary’s science centre is a pioneer in science entertainment and programming, with roots dating back to 1967. Home to one of Western Canada’s largest dome theatre, the Digital Immersion Gallery, VR experiences, and innovative spaces like Steven’s Lab, where interactive experiments unfold before your eyes. From the robot-dog Flint to Canada’s first robot-coa5ter, R05iE, and a 15-acre park surrounding the science of the developing brain, Spark is a hub for creative encounters.
Position Overview
TELUS Spark is seeking a relationship-oriented Specialist, Community Partnerships and Group Volunteers on a 1-year project based contract to lead the expansion of community partnerships and volunteer engagement across Spark.
Funded through the Government of Alberta's Community Initiatives Program, the Project aims to strengthen organizational capacity, cultivate meaningful community relationships, and create creative opportunities for individuals, groups, and organizations to engage with Spark's mission.
Working across multiple departments, this position will expand community-based engagement opportunities, develop and implement strategic volunteer initiatives, cultivate corporate and board volunteer experiences, and support volunteer participation in major organizational
projects and events. This role is focused on growth, partnerships, and capacity building, complementing the work of Spark's Volunteer Coordinator, who leads the day-to-day coordination of the volunteer program.
This role reports directly into the Senior Director, People and Culture with a dotted reporting line to the Senior Director, Advancement & External Relations.
Contract term: October 1, 2026 – October 1, 2027.
Key Responsibilities
Community Partnerships & Engagement
Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, non-profits, educational institutions,
cultural groups, and other partners aligned with Spark's mission.
Identify collaborative opportunities that increase community participation, accessibility, and engagement.
Support the community access program and initiatives in partnership with the Advancement team.
Collaborate with the Indigenous Science team to support relationship-building initiatives and culturally meaningful community engagement opportunities.
Act as a connector between Spark and community partners to foster long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.
Group Volunteer Engagement & Corporate Partnerships
Develop and coordinate meaningful group volunteer opportunities that support Sparks programs, events, and community initiatives.
Partner with Advancement & External Relations to enhance donor stewardship and corporate engagement through volunteer experiences.
Build relationships with corporate partners interested in employee volunteer opportunities.
Support the development of volunteer experiences that strengthen organizational visibility, community impact, and partner engagement.
Volunteer Strategy & Program Expansion
Support the implementation and ongoing evolution of Spark's organization-wide volunteer engagement strategy alongside the Coordinator, Volunteer Program.
Identify and develop new volunteer pathways that align with Sparks priorities and community needs.
Expand opportunities for specialized volunteers who contribute expertise, mentorship, science engagement, education programming support, and community outreach.
Assess volunteer engagement trends and recommend opportunities to strengthen volunteer participation and impact across the organization.
Develop frameworks, resources, and recommendations that support sustainable long-term volunteer growth.
Develop a training framework and program for volunteers as part of Spark’s career development program for volunteers.
Board Volunteer Engagement
Support opportunities for meaningful board member volunteer participation and engagement.
Collaborate with Spark’s leaders to identify strategic volunteer initiatives that strengthen governance, community connection, and organizational impact.
Assist in coordinating volunteer opportunities that align with Spark's board engagement objectives.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Knowledge
3-5 years of experience in community engagement, partnership development, volunteer program development, stakeholder relations, or nonprofit program coordination.
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective relationships with diverse stakeholders. Experience working with community organizations, or charitable/nonprofit organizations advantageous.
Experience working with Indigenous communities an asset.
Knowledge of community partnership development and stakeholder engagement practices advantageous.
Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills.
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and facilitation skills.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.
Strong initiative, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
A proven track record of adding value to an organization’s culture and initiatives.
Ability to model high performance, flexibility and kindness in a rapidly changing growth environment.
Willingness to learn and adapt to change.
Ability to work evenings and weekends as required, particularly during volunteer orientation weekends and major event weekends such as Beakerhead.
