Staff - Union Job Category CUPE 116 | Job Profile CUPE 116 | Salaried - Trades 3 - Electrician | Job Title Trades 3 - Utility Electrician | Department Electrical Trades | Electrical Utilities | Engineering & Utilities | Energy and Water Services | Facilities | Compensation Range $7,487.00 - $8,028.00 CAD Monthly | Posting End Date September19,2026 | Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59PM on the PostingEndDate. | Under general supervision, performs skilled work at the journey person level in preventive maintenance, breakdown maintenance, diagnostic repair, alterations and installations of electrical, electro-mechanical, control and communications systems and equipment pertaining to high voltage and low voltage utility systems.

Organizational Status: Reports to Head Electrician, UBC Energy & Water Service, Engineering & Utilities. Performs duties normally required in the electrical trade (for which training and expertise has previously been acquired) such as: preventive and breakdown maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, calibration, and installation as a High Voltage Utility Electrician across the university campus. Works from oral and written instructions from immediate supervisor(s).

Performs all duties as instructed in compliance with applicable regulatory codes and regulations and in accordance with work orders, drawings, documents, and time schedules. Corrects electrical deficiencies brought forward by tenants through the service request program. Provides accurate and complete information (on the status of equipment and systems) when completing time entry, work orders, preventative maintenance reports, and test-inspection reports.

Communicates with customers, tenants, managers, and coworkers as required to ensure the efficient delivery of service. Solid verbal and written communication skills are mandatory. Responsible for the correct use and safekeeping of assigned vehicle, materials, tools, and equipment used in the execution of the work performed.

The individual shall keep current with trade maintenance concepts, technology,



and theory and maintain familiarity with manufacturer's and regulatory maintenance requirements. Ensures personal protective equipment is used at all times where required. Ensures compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety legislation, guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and practices.

Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, distribution equipment, appliances, apparatus, fixtures, or other components, using hand tools, power tools, and various test instruments, to ensure compatibility and safety of the electrical system. ~ Diagnose causes of Electrical Distribution and Electrical problems or failures in assigned systems for the purpose of identifying equipment and/or systems to be repaired. ~ Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes. ~ Perform installation, testing, and maintenance of: ~12kV underground cables, ~ Metering systems for revenue customers and core building electrical services. Work in confined underground spaces as part of regular maintenance and construction activities. Work in outdoor environments on and off traffic corridors in all weather conditions as part of regular maintenance and construction activities.

Work with heavy tools and equipment in excess of 50 lb. (23kg) as part of regular maintenance and construction activities. Work near exposed energized 12kV & 60kV equipment as part of regular maintenance activities. Calibrate instrumentation devices using specialized test equipment and software.

Work is performed within prescribed and accepted trade standards,



in accordance with job requirements and specifications and external regulatory requirements; inappropriate repair/maintenance decisions could delay resolution of problems and adversely affect user access to equipment/system and possible safety of users.

Supervision Received

Works under general supervision of the Head and Subhead Electrician; Supervision Given Periodically, positions in this classification may be assigned responsibility for providing training, mentoring, and/or checking the work of one or more apprentices or laborers assigned to assist with the work. A trade certification to a journeyperson level as a RedSealElectrician or Industrial Electrician. Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Ability to interpret drawings and specifications, sketches of work required, and maintenance manuals. A working knowledge of relevant industrial safety regulations and building codes. Computer and software skills required.

Ability to independently learn recent equipment and software technologies. May be required to work various shifts including days, evenings and weekends. Willing and able to respond at short notice to Emergency Calls outside working hours.
