The City of Courtenay invites applications for a position of temporary (12-months) "Engineering Technologist” in the Utilities Division of the Operational Services Department. This is a union position subject to the terms and conditions in the collective agreement between the City and CUPE Local 556.
The Utilities Technologist provides technical support and coordinates technical work related to developing, implementing, and optimizing the Utilities Division program(s). This position is involved in the day-to-day planning of preventive maintenance programs and the effective implementation of industry best practices related to utilities.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of a two-year Diploma of Civil Engineering Technology.
Occupational Certificates, Licenses, Association Memberships:
- Certified membership in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia as an Applied Sciences Technologist or as a Certified Technician.
- Current Environmental Operator Certification Program (EOCP) Water Distribution System Operator Level II certification (Preferred)
- Current certification as a Cross Connection Control Inspector from a recognized institution.
- Valid British Columbia Class 5 Driver's License
Experience:
- Sound (3 years) experience in Operations and utilities environment with emphasis on utilities coordination,
planned preventative maintenance and effective system(s) operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Considerable knowledge of AWWA standards, industry best practices and legislation related to Utilities system operations.
- Considerable knowledge of construction and maintenance practices
- Solid interpersonal, communication, and report writing skills
- Strong computer skills including MS Office, ArcGIS and databases
- Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently
- Ability to oversee the work of others
- Ability to interpret and apply City bylaws, policies, procedures, engineering design standards and specifications
- Ability to read blueprints, construction drawings and schematics
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AFTER HIRING
- First Aid Emergency Level - Industry and CPR Level A Certification; Traffic Control training; WHMIS Certification; and other job-related safety training
- EOCP and BCWWA memberships
