Overview
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Student Optician to join our healthcare team. This role provides an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in ophthalmology, optometry, and medical assisting to gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting. The Student Optician will support optical services, assist with patient care, and learn about the latest advancements in eye health and vision care. Prior experience in retail sales, laboratory work, or medical records management is a plus. The position offers valuable exposure to medical terminology, EMR systems such as Epic and other clinic software, and specialized knowledge in anatomy, physiology, and medical billing. This paid internship is ideal for students pursuing careers in ophthalmology or optometry.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient intake by recording vital signs and updating medical records using EMR systems like Epic
- Support optical services including lens fitting, frame selection, and basic adjustments
- Help maintain a clean and sterile environment following aseptic technique standards
- Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure accurate documentation of medical history and clinical notes
- Learn and adhere to HIPAA regulations to protect patient confidentiality
- Support laboratory tasks such as lens measurements and quality control checks
- Assist with inventory management of optical supplies and equipment
- Participate in patient education regarding eye health, contact lens care, and prescription details
- Gain experience in medical coding related to ophthalmology procedures and billing processes
Skills
- Basic knowledge of ophthalmology, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Familiarity with EMR systems such as Epic or similar platforms
- Experience or interest in retail sales, retail management, or retail math is advantageous
- Strong organizational skills with attention to detail for managing medical records and billing documentation
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients of all ages, including pediatrics and senior care populations
- Knowledge of vital signs measurement and aseptic techniques preferred but not required
- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly within a clinical environment
- Prior laboratory experience or clinic experience related to eye care is beneficial but not mandatory
