The Water Operations Branch is a branch within the Infrastructure Department. The branch’s key responsibilities include the operation and maintenance of the City’s environmental infrastructure and systems, including water supply, treatment, and distribution systems. This includes the repair and maintenance of drinking water treatment systems, water mains, valves, hydrants, and residential main shut-off valves; the repair and replacement of water meters used for service billing; the inspection of water mains and services; the installation of Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) water services and meters, new home meters, and hydrant-metered gate valves; the administration of the Backflow Prevention Program; the resolution of water quality or water pressure issues and complaints; the maintenance of City standard drawing details for water specifications; and the prevention of infrastructure damage through locating services for all of the City of Barrie’s buried infrastructure in accordance with “One Call” legislation.
The Water Distribution Services Project Operator is responsible for managing specific projects and programs related to the maintenance of the water distribution system from treatment facilities to the property line within the City. Projects include, but are not limited to, the annual System Swabbing Program, Air Valve Program, and main breaks on transmission mains, as well as associated design review and contract administration functions. This position acts as the Overall Responsible Operator (ORO)
for the Water Distribution subsystem on a rotating schedule and acts as the Water Distribution Services Foreperson, as assigned.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
- Two (2) year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technician or Environmental Engineering Technician
- Valid Water Distribution Class III Certificate and/or Water Distribution and Supply Certificate from the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP)
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s Licence in good standing

Experience:
- Four (4) years of experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position
- Demonstrated experience with an emphasis on operations and maintenance of a drinking water distribution system, including two (2)
years of experience as an Operator-in-Charge (OIC)
- Demonstrated project management experience
Knowledge/Skill/Ability:
- Working knowledge of the following legislation, regulations, or requirements: Ontario Drinking Water Regulations and Standards; Drinking Water Works Permit / Permit to Take Water; Safe Drinking Water Act; Municipal Drinking Water License; the Drinking Water Quality Management Standard; American Water Works Standards; Disinfection of Drinking Water in Ontario and Ontario Water Resources Act; Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and WHMIS
- Demonstrated ability to: communicate effectively verbally and in writing; read and create drawings and plans; lift and carry heavy objects on a daily basis
- Intermediate skills include: Analytical; Interpersonal; Leadership; Problem Solving; Record-Keeping; Time Management
- Basic computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Internet Explorer

Hours: The normal hours of work are 40 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement
