Overview
Position Overview
Perform manual welding on structural steel assemblies to drawing and code requirements. This is a hand position working with company-supplied equipment in a shop fabrication setting.
Key Responsibilities
Lay out, fit, tack, and weld structural steel: beams, columns, plate, skids, pipe racks, stairs, platforms, and handrail
Weld to CSA W59 and applicable project specifications using shop-approved procedures
Read and work from structural drawings, shop details, and weld symbols
Prep material — cut, bevel, grind, and clean joints; verify fit-up, squareness, and alignment before welding
Control distortion through proper sequencing, tacking, and heat input
Operate oxy-fuel and plasma cutting equipment, grinders, and shop hand tools
Perform basic rigging and use overhead cranes and hoists to position material
Visually inspect completed welds and repair defects as required
Follow site safety requirements and participate in hazard assessments
Qualifications
Journeyman Welder certificate or equivalent shop experience
CWB certification under CSA W47.1 for the processes and positions required
Proficiency in FCAW and SMAW
Ability to weld in all positions, including overhead and vertical up
Solid blueprint reading and weld symbol interpretation
Overhead crane and rigging tickets considered an asset
Standard safety tickets: CSTS, PST
Own hand tools and personal protective equipment
Working Conditions
Shop-based fabrication with occasional field or site work
Exposure to noise, fumes, heat, and confined work areas
Overtime as project schedules require
Physically demanding work requiring extended standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting
Pay: $37.00-$47.00 per hour
