About Surrey, British Columbia
Located just 40 minutes from Vancouver, Surrey is British Columbia’s second-largest city — a dynamic, multicultural hub with approximately 700,000 residents. Around 30% of the population is South Asian, making it one of the most diverse and vibrant communities in Canada.
Ethnic Communities and Worship
Surrey is defined by its rich ethnic diversity, particularly its prominent South Asian community. This cultural depth is reflected across the city's demographics, neighborhoods, and local amenities. Residents and visitors can explore a variety of multicultural offerings, including Punjabi markets, Sikh temples, Chinese supermarkets, Filipino eateries, and various ethnic festivals. This diversity is further highlighted by the prevalence of languages such as Tagalog, Hindi, Mandarin, and Korean, as well as dedicated ethnic media outlets like South Asian radio.
The city's religious landscape is equally diverse. According to the 2021 census,
over 27% of residents identify as Sikh, making it the city's predominant ethnic faith. This is practiced widely through local gurdwaras and significant cultural events like the annual Vaisakhi parade. Other significant religious communities include Muslim (5.5%), Hindu (5.4%), and Buddhist (1.9%) groups.
As a hub for the South Asian community, Surrey is a premier destination for authentic Indian cuisine and specialized markets. These markets are well-regarded for their selection of spices, fresh produce, and halal meats.
