About the Role Our client is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Plant Breeder to join their research and development team in the Kimberley area. This critical role focuses on developing new, improved field crop varieties with enhanced yield, disease resistance, and adaptation to challenging environmental conditions prevalent in the region. You will lead breeding programs from initial crossing to final variety release, utilizing cutting-edge genetic and genomic tools. This is a significant opportunity for a dedicated plant scientist to contribute to agricultural advancement in the Northern Cape .
Key Responsibilities Design and execute plant breeding programs for key field crops, focusing on traits such as yield, stress tolerance, and quality.
Conduct field trials, collect phenotypic data, and perform statistical analysis for selection and evaluation.
Utilize molecular markers and genomic tools to accelerate breeding efforts and enhance selection accuracy.
Develop strategies for managing pests and diseases within breeding nurseries and trial plots.
Collaborate with agronomists, pathologists, and other researchers to ensure comprehensive variety development.
Prepare technical reports, research proposals, and contribute to scientific publications.
Requirements Ph.D.
in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, or a closely related field.
Minimum of 6 years of hands-on experience in crop breeding, including practical application of quantitative genetics and molecular techniques.
Proven expertise in experimental design, field plot evaluation, and statistical analysis software (e.g., SAS, R).
Experience with various breeding methodologies, including conventional breeding and marker-assisted selection (MAS).
Robust understanding of crop physiology and agronomy relevant to field crops.
Demonstrated ability to manage research projects and lead breeding efforts in the agricultural context of the Northern Cape.
