About the Role
As a Senior Automation Systems Programmer, you will develop, integrate, and commission advanced automation systems for custom manufacturing applications. Depending on your area of expertise, you will specialize in PLC and control systems programming, robot integration, or both, taking ownership of programming activities from development and testing through commissioning and customer handoff.

Working closely with project managers, engineering teams, trades, and customers, you will troubleshoot complex technical challenges, ensure systems meet project and safety requirements, and contribute to the continued development of BOS automation programming standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Skills Area (Expertise required in at least ONE of the following areas)
PLC/Control Systems Programming

Create functional PLC and HMI programs that follow company standards and customer specifications

Develop and implement communication and IO interfacing between devices and systems

Install programming into machines and troubleshoot IO, communications, and machine functions

Develop safety PLC programs in accordance with CSA Standards and complete testing to ensure proper function

Develop and integrate custom Java applications to extend automation system functionality, including custom GUIs for vision system verification, CAD-to-path robot position calculation tools, and other specialized system interfaces

AND/OR
Robot Integration

Create simulations to complete reach studies and test cycle time to verify robot integration concepts

Develop robot paths and review zoning to confirm safe interaction between robots and other systems

Create, configure, and test all robot safety features including DCS and Safe Zones for operator interaction





Perform application-specific programming (e.g., material handling, dispensing, welding, laser applications)

Plan and develop robot dress out for system optimization

Secondary Skills Area
Project Collaboration

Fully understand project scope and timeline, reporting inconsistencies or delays to SPLs and PMs

Work with customers, project managers, designers, and trades to solve problems and deliver functional systems

Commission equipment at customer locations by testing interfaces, setting up communications, and completing tests

Identify inefficiencies within processes and implement improvements

Proactively identify risks and develop robust recovery solutions

Documentation & Quality Control

Complete detailed equipment manuals and troubleshooting documents

Maintain the QCC for assigned projects and update the Programmers FAT/SAT Roadblock list

Attend White Board meetings, Design Reviews, and BOM Reviews to provide updates and feedback

Participate in development and implementation of company standards for automation programming

Project Management

Maintain quality work output following project requirements and ensuring thorough completion

Drive company values and culture

Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safety of project space

Act as Project Lead when assigned

Address and elevate issues through appropriate channels when necessary

Degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field

8+ years of experience in industrial automation programming, controls integration, robotics, or a related automation environment

Demonstrated expertise in at least one primary technical area: PLC/HMI and control systems programming or industrial robot programming and integration

Experience commissioning and troubleshooting automated equipment, including I/O, communications, safety systems, robot applications, or machine functionality

Strong understanding of industrial automation systems, equipment safety, and integration within custom machinery or manufacturing environments

Ability to interpret technical requirements, collaborate across project teams, and travel to customer sites for equipment commissioning and support
