Title: Research Occupational Therapist Development and Rehabilitation
Term: 2 Casual positions, 2-year term with possibility of renewal
Salary: $44.19 – $54.65 / hour, Will be commensurate with skills and experience
Reports to: Division Head and Medical Director of the Department of Pediatric Rehabilitation (Dr Anna McCormick), Clinical Research Chair in Pediatric Rehabilitation (Dr Hana Alazem)

CHEO RI has an immediate requirement for 2 casual Research Occupational Therapists to support a virtual assessment study and a Randomized Control Trail study.
We are looking for highly motivated Research Occupational Therapists that will be working with participants to facilitate data capture of across two studies, in a hybrid and/or in‑person format.
On‑site presence is required for assessments that need to be completed in‑person.
An estimate of 10 children will be recruited at CHEO for each study.
Both studies incorporate rolling participant enrollment, and both studies are anticipated to have data collection completed within 2 years.
VIRTUAL ASSESSMENT STUDY The Research Occupational Therapists will be working with participants to test the reliability and validity of conducting diverse assessments in virtual modes over 4 weeks.
The Research Occupational Therapist will conduct three 1‑1.5hr upper extremity (hand/arm) assessments with participants; two of these assessments will be completed virtually while the participant is at home via Microsoft Teams video conferencing, while one of these assessments will be completed in‑person at CHEO clinic spaces.
RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRAIL The research Occupational Therapist will be working with participants to test the reliability, validity and feasibility of using a movement‑tracking video game tailored for upper extremity (hand/arm) skills training over 26 weeks.
The research Occupational Therapist will conduct three 1‑1.5 hr assessments with participants; all three assessments will be completed in person at CHEO clinic spaces.
RESPONSIBILITIES Partner with child participant and family to implement the child’s individualized goals according to the study protocol
Schedule and conduct clinical research assessments with study participants for both studies, either in‑person and/or over Microsoft Teams video conferencing platform
Facilitating administration of the following movements/activities during assessments:



Confirm the participant’s Manual Abilities Classification System (MACS) level
Grip strength of the hemiplegic hand
Active range of motion (aROM) of the hemiplegic side for wrist, elbow and shoulder
Box and Block Test (BBT) to measure unilateral gross manual dexterity
Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (CHEQ) to survey parent’s perspective on the child’s ability to perform bimanual activities
Assisted Hand Assessment (AHA) to evaluate effectiveness of hemiplegic hand use in bimanual activities
Shriner’s Hospital Upper Extremity Evaluation (SHUEE-SFA) to evaluate functional and spontaneous ability
Quality of Upper Extremity Skills Test (QUEST)
Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) to assess self‑perceived performance and satisfaction on activities key to the child and family (*only at first appointment)
Performance Quality Rating Scale (PQRS) to assess the child’s performance on the goals set by the child
Training will be provided, as needed
Each assessment will take approximately 2 hours; about 1.5 hours to facilitate the assessment with an additional 15‑30 minutes for set‑up
Immediate live‑manual assessment of participant performance across upper extremity movements/activities will take approximately 30 minutes
Post‑assessment manual video scoring of participant performance across upper extremity movements/activities will take approximately 1 hour
Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILL AND ABILITIES Bachelor or Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy (Essential)
A minimum of 2 years’ work experience as an Occupational Therapist (Essential)
Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, in good standing (Essential)
Knowledge of and skills in child development and experience working with children and youth with cerebral palsy and/or hemiplegia (Essential)
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interprofessional care team (Essential)
Experience in assessment for upper limb function and activity. Previous experience as a study assessor (Preferred)
Experience with study outcome measures (eg. Canadian Occupational Performance Measure, Assisting Hands Assessment, Box and Block Test, Quality of Upper Extremity Evaluation, etc.) (Essential)
Understanding of research design, procedures, guidelines and standards governing clinical Research including Personal Health Information Protection Act (Essential)
Data management experience (Essential)
Proficiency in computer skills (Microsoft Office) (Essential)
Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal and organizational skills (Essential)
Demonstrated collegiality, professionalism and team skills (Essential)
Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and ability to work independently and collaboratively as a member of an interprofessional team (Essential)
Minimum 1 year of research experience working on a Clinical Trial (Preferred) preferably a Regulated Trial (volunteer acceptable)
Bilingualism (English/French) (Preferred)




WORKING CONDITIONS Work in a clinical hospital setting with regular interaction with children and their parents and/or caregivers. Flexibility to work within a hybrid model that combines remote work with on‑site presence as required.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS Eligible to work in Canada; Compliance with CHEO RI’s occupational health, immunization, and health‑surveillance requirements, as applicable to the role and work environment.
Completion of a Police Record Check, in accordance with institutional and regulatory requirements.
