Job Purpose
The School Mental Health Counsellor provides mental health and wellness support to students across Kindergarten to Grade 12 programming and the Kaya Pomeh Adult Education program within the Kitaskinaw Education Authority (KEA). This role supports students experiencing emotional, behavioural, social, or mental health challenges that may impact their ability to participate fully in school and learning environments. The counsellor provides individual counselling, small group support, crisis response assistance, and consultation with school staff and families. The School Mental Health Counsellor works collaboratively with school principals, teachers, student support teams, families, and community partners to promote student wellbeing and support protected, inclusive learning environments. Mental health support within KEA recognizes the importance of holistic wellbeing, acknowledging the interconnectedness of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health. Mental health support within KEA recognizes that student wellbeing is essential to academic success and personal development. The School Mental Health Counsellor supports students in developing:

Education, Experience And Requirements

Strong counselling and therapeutic skills

Knowledge of child and youth development

Knowledge of adult development

Knowledge of trauma-informed practices

Strong communication and relationship-building skills





Ability to collaborate with school staff and families

Understanding or speaking nêhiyawêwin (Cree language) is considered an asset.

Compassion and empathy when supporting students

Cultural humility and respect for Cree teachings and community values

Professional integrity and ethical practice

Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills

Commitment to student wellbeing and mental health support

Master’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related mental health field

Registered or eligible for registration with a relevant professional body such as:

Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW)

College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP)

Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)

Clear Criminal Record Check with the Vulnerability Sector and Child Welfare Intervention Check is required.

Experience providing counselling services to children, youth, or adults.

Experience supporting individuals experiencing emotional or mental health challenges.

Experience working in school-based environments

Experience supporting youth mental health

Experience working with Indigenous students and communities

Experience collaborating with school teams and community agencies

Working Conditions
The Mental Health Counsellor will work in an office environment and is required to work 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday. While adhering to the Enoch Cree Nation Human Resources Policy & Procedure Manual.
