Our client, the Hamlet of Gjoa Haven, is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic (Heavy Duty & Automotive) to oversee shop operations and help ensure the municipal fleet remains safe, reliable, and well maintained.

This is a hands-on leadership role for a dual-ticketed professional with experience working on both heavy-duty and automotive vehicles. The successful candidate will lead the shop team, support preventative maintenance, and provide technical expertise across the Hamlet’s fleet.

Key Responsibilities

- Oversee daily municipal shop operations, including preventative maintenance, work prioritization, and parts planning.
- Service, diagnose, and repair heavy equipment and light-duty vehicles across the municipal fleet.
- Resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using diagnostic software and manufacturer-specific tools.
- Supervise, mentor, and train apprentices, trainees, and mechanics.
- Maintain safety compliance and support reliable operations.
- Work with operators and the Public Works team to support municipal operations.

Qualifications

- Journeyperson or Red Seal certification as a Heavy-Duty Equipment Technician.




- Journeyperson or Red Seal certification as an Automotive Service Technician, or equivalent automotive experience.
- Five or more years of supervisory experience overseeing mechanics or maintenance staff.
- Advanced diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for heavy equipment and light-duty vehicles, including municipal fleet assets.
- Experience with electronic diagnostic software and manufacturer-specific tools.
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Willingness to live and work in a remote northern community.

Compensation, Housing and Relocation

- Base wage of $70.00 per hour, plus applicable Northern/Settlement Allowance and VTA.
- Shared housing provided by the employer in Gjoa Haven.
- Employer-paid flights to and from Gjoa Haven.
- Support for transporting personal belongings to Gjoa Haven.
- Additional employer-paid trips, subject to operational needs and approval.
