Senior Database Administrator (8+ years) to support Microsoft SQL Server environments using database security, HA/DR, and cloud technologies- 41494 Our financial services client is seeking a Senior Database Administrator (8+ years) to support Microsoft SQL Server environments using database security, HA/DR, and cloud technologies- 41494
Contract Duration: 12 months
Location: Toronto/Hybrid 2 days on site.The work location may be subject to change and could be based in either the Downtown or Midtown office later.
Schedule Hours: 37.5/ week
Story Behind the Need:
The Global Technology and Enterprise Platform (GTEP) Database Operations team at bank is responsible for providing end-to-end support for Microsoft data platform products across all regions where the Bank operates. Our services span the full database lifecycle, including deployment, project support, ongoing post–go-live operations including maintenance of database security.
Reporting to the DBA Manager, the Senior Database Administrator is responsible for supporting Microsoft SQL Server environments both on-premises and in the public cloud. As part of the database administration team, you will contribute to ensuring optimal database availability, security, and performance.
This role follows a hybrid work model (onsite and remote) and includes participation in a rotational on-call/on-shift schedule to provide after-hours support. The Database Administrator must be available to provide remote support in response to monitoring alerts, as well as to perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities during evenings and weekends (business will provide time in lieu)
Role Responsibilities / Typical Day in Role:
Plan, configure, and deploy Microsoft SQL Server instances and components across on-premises and public cloud environments in alignment with CIS and Bank security standards.
Adhere to database best practices, security standards, and vulnerability remediation requirements for SQL Server environments based on the regulatory standards of OSFI, SOX etc.
Implement and maintain SQL Server access standards and login with password policies, complexities and maintain passwords secured in password management systems
Implement and maintain Database encryption at rest and transit using certificates based on the Crypto standards.
Maintain SQL Server software currency, including patching, upgrades, and migrations.
Support High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions, including backup, recovery, and failover/failback of both local and distributed databases to secure the data.
Candidate Requirements/Must Have Skills:
Minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience as a Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator specially involving database security features and standards.
Database and access encryption of TDE,



TLS and column level encryptions.
Scripting and automation using T-SQL, SSIS, PowerShell, C#, and VBScript
Strong analytical, problem-solving, troubleshooting, and automation skills
Nice-To-Have Skills:
Active Directory, firewall configurations (IP/port), and domain authentication/trust mechanisms related to SQL Server and Windows connectivity
Database administration in cloud environments, including GCP (Cloud SQL for SQL Server, GCVE, GCE) and Azure (Managed Instance, DBaaS, IaaS)
SQL Server installation, configuration, and system hardening
Educational Requirements:
Post-secondary education in Computer Science, Math, or related discipline.
Microsoft Data Platform and Azure/Google Cloud certification is desired for this role.
Best VS. Average Candidate:
An ideal candidate has 8+ years of SQL Server DBA experience with solid expertise in database security (TDE, TLS, encryption), HA/DR, cloud platforms (Azure/GCP), and automation using PowerShell and T-SQL. They can independently manage complex environments, drive security compliance, and troubleshoot critical issues.
