Our Winnipeg office is looking for an experienced Legal Assistant to join our wills and estates team. The wills and estates Legal Assistant will work co-operatively with the lawyers and paralegals in the Trusts, Estates and Legacy Planning group to assist executors, administrators and personal representatives through the estate administration process and assist in the drafting and execution of estate planning documents. The successful candidate must be able to multi-task and prioritize workload, pay attention to detail and have excellent organizational, communication and written skills.
Responsibilities include:
Drafting, revising and editing Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Directives and ancillary estate planning documents as required
Drafting correspondence including reports to clients
Maintaining vault records for storing original estate planning records
Gathering information and assisting with preparation of estate administration documentation, including Requests for Probate, Requests for Administration, inventories, affidavits and other court documentation, as applicable.
Filing Requests for Probate, Request for Administration with the Court of King’s Bench
Assisting in the process of realizing the assets or payments of liabilities including direct contact with various institutions
Communicating directly with clients, fielding calls from prospective clients and referring prospective clients appropriately
Attending client meetings for document signings
Handling of billing and related accounting matters
Calendar management for meetings, diarization of files and tracking progress of file matters
Providing additional assistance and general office duties as assigned
Qualifications include:
Graduate from an accredited Legal Assistant program and/or equivalent experience
Minimum of three years of experience in a legal assistant role supporting the wills and estates practice area
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong English grammar and proofreading abilities and a high level of attention to detail
Working knowledge of Manitoba estate administration, probate procedures, Court of King’s Bench filing requirements and legal terminology
Experience drafting legal documents and correspondence
Excellent organizational and time management skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to liaise with a variety of people
Good computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines under pressure
