Job Description Position Purpose summary The priority of the Floor Counsellor is to ensure professional, safe and structured support to our clients in the Toronto Harbour Light Treatment program. The Floor Counsellor will behave professionally and courteously at all times, presenting a positive impression of Toronto Harbour Light to the clients living within the facility. The Floor Counsellor will document accurately and appropriately all contacts with clients and ensure the safety of the setting at all times.
Accountabilities Responsibilities Appropriately model healthy life skills and socialization to clients
Provide support to clients in residence and ensure guidelines are followed
Written and Verbal Communication (example)
Provide reports regarding failure to return, urine screens, bed checks in EMHware
Reports on nightly rounds, clients overall attitude, any observations or infractions through EMHware
Other reporting when required to document statistics or other program items




CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT Communicates with Program Coordinator
Communicates with other Treatment staff, Residential Care Workers and Senior Managers when required
Appropriately communicates with Support Services staff when necessary
Governance Boards and Councils None
Internal May sit on internal committees
MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership Reports directly to: Program Coordinator
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT Use or distribution of materials such as urine screens, office supplies, supplies required by treatment clients, including medications.
WORKING CONDITIONS The performance of the job requires frequent keyboarding and sitting for long periods of time. Requires standing and moving around for long periods of time. The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.
Education, Qualifications and Certifications Diploma in one of the human services professions, social services preferred Alternate level of education and experience may be considered
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements 1+ year experience within social services field
1+ year experience in mental health/addiction recovery field preferred
Experience working with diverse population, men specifically
Experience with mental health, concurrent disorders, treatment and recovery
Skills and Capabilities Excellent oral and written communication skills




Education and experience in basic counseling skills, and knowledge of Abstinence Based Model of Treatment
Crisis/Conflict Management
Skills Diversity awareness and appreciation
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
First Aid/CPR Certification an asset
WHMIS training an asset
Proficient with Windows based computer systems, MS Word, e-mail and data entry
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $21.28 to $26.60 with a maximum of $31.92. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
