The Montessori Substitute Teacher (ECE) provides adaptable classroom support across our Montessori programs and may be assigned to either the Toddler (19–36 months) or Preschool (3–5.5 years) classroom based on daily staffing needs. The role requires confidently supporting children at different stages of development by fostering their language, movement, independence, social-emotional development, and learning in a warm, responsive Montessori-inspired environment. Responsibilities include ensuring active supervision and children’s safety and well-being, supporting classroom routines and Montessori practices, responding to individual needs, communicating positively with families and colleagues, collaborating with the teaching team, and following all health, safety, and Alberta licensing standards.
Job Duties Follow all Alberta licensing requirements, safety procedures, and emergency protocols, ensuring active supervision, ratio compliance, and a safe, responsive environment at all times
Provide warm, attuned, relationship-based care and create a calm, nurturing, and predictable environment for each child
Provide flexible support in either the Toddler classroom (19–36 months) or Preschool classroom (3–5.5 years) based on daily staffing and program needs.
Works under the guidance of the educator in the classroom to ensure consistency in classroom routines, expectations, and care
Adapt confidently to different classrooms, age groups, routines, and developmental needs while following the guidance and established practices of the classroom educator.
Support children’s development through gentle guidance, fostering independence in movement, emotional regulation, and positive social interactions, early language,
and self-help skills
Support individual care needs and daily routines, including meals and snacks, rest, toileting, and diapering when required.
Guide children through routines and transitions with warmth, patience, consistency, and clear expectations.
Support Montessori-inspired classroom practices by encouraging independence, respecting children’s concentration and choices, modelling appropriate use of materials, and helping maintain an orderly and inviting environment.
Observe children throughout the day and communicate any developmental, behavioural, health, safety, or other concerns to the classroom educator and/or Director in accordance with centre policies.
Maintain warm, respectful, and professional communication with children, families, educators, and other members of the Flourish team.
Work collaboratively with the other educator in the classroom and team to support a consistent, calm, and well functioning classroom environment
Follow all health, safety, and sanitization procedures, including responding appropriately to illness, incidents, and emergencies
Complete daily cleaning, sanitizing, laundry, and housekeeping responsibilities to ensure classrooms remain clean, safe, and welcoming.
Support daily routines and transitions including arrival, Montessori work periods, outdoor play, walks, meals and snacks, rest periods, and departure while promoting safe exploration and meaningful learning experiences.
Demonstrate flexibility in responding to changing classroom and staffing needs.
Support overall school operations by assisting in other classrooms or program areas as needed and completing other reasonable duties assigned by the Director.
