Senior Tax Associates
Full-time Hybrid
Salary - $85K to 90K per annum
Stern Cohen LLP is an award-winning public accounting firm located in Midtown Toronto at Yonge and St. Clair. For 63 years, we’ve helped businesses, professionals and organizations succeed through practical accounting, tax

and advisory services. Our approach combines deep expertise, responsive service and modern technology.

The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Senior Tax Associate to join our tax specialist team.

The Senior Tax Associate will work directly with a Tax Manager and two Tax Partners. The firm’s Tax Department provides tax advisory and tax planning services, handles complex tax filings (e.g. non-resident filings), and supports the rest of the firm. Unlike other firms, our Tax Department is not responsible for the tax filings of the entire firm. We are an advisory and tax planning-driven tax department.

We are seeking a candidate who aspires to a career in tax and is eager to grow with the firm. An ideal candidate may have recently completed their Canadian CPA at a small to midsize accounting firm and is looking to move into a dedicated tax role. We will support and encourage the candidate to enroll in the CPA in-depth tax program.

Responsibilities

Performing preliminary research into income tax and indirect tax issues;

Preparing and analyzing corporate, personal, partnership, and trust income tax returns, including complex and specialty filings such as deceased returns, multi-jurisdictional filings, non-resident filings, and related

disclosures;

Completing a variety of specialty tax forms (e.g., T2057, T2054, T2062);

Preparing clear, well supported working papers to accompany tax filings and analysis;

Communicating with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on behalf of our clients and assisting with audit support and information requests;

Preparing objections, taxpayer relief request, and voluntary disclosure submissions;

Identifying potential tax issues and planning opportunities during file preparation and review;

Assisting with year-end tax planning analysis; and

Participating in weekly tax group meetings and contributing to ongoing technical discussions.

Skills and Experience

Possess a recently acquired Canadian accounting designation (CPA)

Enrollment in, or willingness to enroll in, the CPA In-depth tax program

Experience with owner-managed businesses is considered an asset

Have a keen interest and desire to work in Canadian personal and corporate tax

Demonstrate well-developed analytical and research skills, together with attention to detail

Be committed to providing exceptional client service

Ability to handle multiple assignments, work independently and as part of a team within deadline-drive compliance cycles

Superior communication and interpersonal skills (both verbal and written)

Well-organized, able to balance competing demands, and demonstrate strong ownership of assigned work

Strong documentation and file management skills with the ability to maintain organized, well supported working papers
