The Insurance Council of British Columbia is the regulatory organization that licenses and regulates the activities of over 50,000 life and general insurance agents, general insurance salespersons, insurance adjusters, and restricted travel insurance agents in British Columbia.
The Opportunity
The Paralegal will provide support to Legal Counsel for the Insurance Council and help manage files as they progress through the licensing and disciplinary processes. The paralegal will also be responsible for reviewing and drafting other correspondence as required.

Duties and Responsibilities
Assists Legal Counsel/Paralegal(s) with cases in Council’s disciplinary processes, in advance of, and during proceedings including before courts and tribunals; reviews transcripts; identifies applicable legislation, jurisprudence and directives; drafts, prepares and proofreads legal material as required.
Manages calendars, case-tracking and the legal counsel filing system.
Reviews assigned documents; identifies anomalies; performs redactions; processes large volumes of documents, drafts legal documents; prepares reports; analyzes and assesses facts and recommends best courses of action.
Assists departments finalize documents/correspondence, including but not limited to production orders and other correspondence.
Arranges accommodations related to potential disciplinary matters, which may include translation or interpretation.
Prepares and reviews Council materials and packages for monthly Council meetings.
Conducts legal and other research related to precedent or licensees/applicants as required.
Performs other administrative tasks including processing of legal/vendor invoices, organizing or supporting internal meetings.
Leads or supports the scheduling of hearings and review committee meetings, including performing conflict checks, organizing hybrid attendance, circulating meeting material, meeting set-up, and arranging out-of-town travel and accommodations as required.
Assists managers and legal counsel with scheduling of committee meetings and other meetings to ensure deadlines are met.
Assists with the handling and management of Council’s responsibilities under applicable privacy legislation and in response to Freedom of Information requests.
Assists with any other duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the capacity of a Paralegal within a regulatory body, government or a law firm.
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree and graduate of a recognized Paralegal program
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
Knowledge of legal theories and principles to apply legal methods and techniques to conduct researchBroad knowledge of the Canadian legal system, administrative law, and regulatory frameworks
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written with high attention to detail
Self-motivated with demonstrated initiative and problem-solving skills
Able to organize large volumes of work and handle competing priorities
Excellent customer service and conflict resolution skills
Comfortable working with multiples stakeholders
Experience with insurance and/or financial services is an asset
Hiring Range: $74,195 - $85,000 per annum. Placement within this range will be determined according to the candidate’s relevant experience, qualifications, and demonstrated competencies.
