Our client, a leading North American energy company, is currently recruiting for a Contract:

Electrical Engineer – Brownfield Projects

Location: Kitimat, BC
Duration: 6 Months, with potential for extension
Schedule: 40 hours/week, Monday to Thursday
Contractor Rate: $50-75/hr
Travel: Site based with a flight and living allowance

Position Overview

The Electrical Engineer – Brownfield Projects will provide electrical engineering support for facility modifications, upgrades, and capital projects within existing operating assets.

The role will focus on reviewing proposed designs, assessing implementation feasibility, verifying existing field conditions, and ensuring new electrical systems and equipment can be safely and effectively integrated into operating facilities.

The successful candidate will work closely with Project Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, Reliability, Construction, and multidisciplinary engineering teams to develop practical electrical solutions that account for existing infrastructure, site constraints, constructability, operational requirements, and project execution considerations.

This position is well suited to an engineer with strong industrial electrical experience who is comfortable working in both office and field environments and has experience supporting brownfield projects through design, construction, commissioning, and startup.

Key Responsibilities

- Provide electrical engineering support for brownfield facility modifications, upgrades, and capital projects.
- Review electrical designs for technical completeness, constructability, operability, and implementation feasibility within existing facilities.
- Conduct site visits, field walkdowns, and investigations to gather design information and verify existing electrical installations.
- Confirm existing electrical drawings, documentation, equipment information, and system configurations against actual field conditions.
- Identify discrepancies between engineering records and installed equipment and support the development of updated or corrected documentation.
- Evaluate the impact of recent electrical loads and equipment on existing electrical infrastructure.
- Review and develop electrical engineering deliverables including single-line diagrams, electrical load lists, cable schedules, equipment specifications, datasheets, schematics, and installation drawings.
- Support power system analysis and electrical system modelling using ETAP.
- Perform or review load flow, short-circuit, motor starting, protection coordination, and arc-flash studies as required.
- Assess existing system capacity and recommend modifications required to accommodate new or revised electrical loads.




- Provide technical input for the selection and application of switchgear, motor control centres, transformers, motors, variable frequency drives, generators, protective relays, and related electrical equipment.
- Review engineering consultant, contractor, and vendor drawings and technical documentation.
- Provide electrical input into equipment procurement, technical bid evaluations, and vendor package reviews.
- Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews, constructability reviews, hazard assessments, Management of Change activities, and technical workshops.
- Coordinate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to understand facility requirements, shutdown constraints, tie-in requirements, and implementation risks.
- Support construction activities by responding to technical queries, reviewing field changes, and resolving electrical design issues.
- Provide engineering support during commissioning, startup, and project turnover.
- Identify practical solutions to electrical design challenges associated with existing operating facilities.
- Ensure electrical engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements.

Technical Experience

The successful candidate should have experience with industrial electrical systems including:

- Medium- and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
- Switchgear and motor control centres.
- Transformers and electrical distribution equipment.
- Motors and variable frequency drives.
- Generators and standby power systems.
- Protective relaying and electrical protection systems.
- Grounding and bonding systems.
- Electrical cable systems and raceways.
- Electrical equipment located within hazardous or classified areas.
- Existing plant electrical infrastructure and brownfield system modifications.
- Electrical power system modelling and analysis using ETAP.
- Experience working with existing facilities where incomplete, outdated, or inconsistent engineering documentation must be verified against field conditions is particularly valuable.

Education and Experience

- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Approximately 7+ years of progressive electrical engineering experience within industrial facilities.
- Demonstrated experience supporting brownfield facility modifications, upgrades, or expansion projects.
- Experience implementing projects within operating facilities is strongly preferred.
- Oil & gas industry experience is highly preferred, including experience within upstream, midstream, pipeline, terminal, refinery, petrochemical, oil sands, or similar industrial environments.




- Practical experience performing field investigations, site walkdowns, and electrical system verification.
- Experience reviewing and checking electrical engineering drawings and design documentation.
- Familiarity with ETAP power system analysis software.
- Experience supporting projects through detailed engineering, construction, commissioning, and startup.
- Working knowledge of applicable Canadian electrical codes, regulations, and industry standards.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration with APEGA is considered an asset but is not required.

- Strong understanding of industrial electrical engineering and power distribution systems.
- Ability to evaluate existing installations and develop practical solutions for brownfield modifications.
- Strong understanding of constructability and the challenges associated with implementing projects within operating facilities.
- Ability to interpret electrical drawings, specifications, vendor information, and existing facility records.
- Strong field awareness and ability to identify discrepancies between drawings and installed conditions.
- Effective analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently assess technical issues and develop practical engineering recommendations.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple engineering activities and changing project priorities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Effective collaboration with engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, vendors, and contractors.
- Safety-focused with an understanding of the requirements associated with executing work within active industrial facilities.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary project team.

Preferred Qualifications

- Previous experience with an owner/operator or within an operating facility environment.
- Oil & gas brownfield project experience.
- Midstream, pipeline, terminal, oil sands, refinery, or petrochemical experience.
- Experience with electrical Management of Change processes.
- Experience assessing electrical system capacity for facility expansions or equipment additions.
- Experience supporting facility shutdowns, electrical tie-ins, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Familiarity with hazardous area classification requirements.
- Experience coordinating with EPC firms, engineering consultants, vendors, and construction contractors.
