Reporting to the Manager Solid Waste Recycling, Traffic Signs and Markings, this position works in the Signs and Markings organizational unit. The Trades Foreperson 2 is skilled supervisory work involved in planning, organizing, and coordinating installation, alteration, repair, maintenance and construction tasks related to traffic signs and markings. The position supervises the work of a diversified group of skilled trades and other subordinates performing work related to the inspection, creation, and maintenance of signage (e.g. building signs, street signs, etc.) and road markings (e.g. lane lines, crosswalks, arrows, etc.). The incumbent schedules the work to ensure efficient operation and is fully responsible for the quality and quantity of the work performed by subordinates; exercises considerable independence of judgement and action in the technical and administrative aspects of the work. Duties include training current employees regarding City Standards and methods; monitoring the work of crews to ensure adherence to established safety procedures, established standards and specifications; may participate in the activities of skilled trades and subordinates. The position also prepares budgets and monitors expenditures; orders all materials and equipment and ensures is maintained; prepares and maintains a variety of records and establishes and maintains effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. The role performs related work as required.

Qualifications include high school graduation supplemented by technical courses related to the work,



plus considerable related experience including some in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The position requires a thorough knowledge of sign manufacturing materials, equipment and manufacturing processes; considerable knowledge of road marking materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, and specifications; SAP and Infor processes pertaining to the Traffic, Signs and Markings Department; of the applicable occupational hazards and safety practices and procedures; of the municipal standards and by-laws related to the work of sign installation and maintenance, and road marking installation and maintenance, and any regulations which govern the work performed, in accordance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada (TAC) and the Traffic Control Manual for Work on Roadways; ability to plan, schedule, assign, and supervise the work of employees; to establish and maintain effective internal and external working relationships; read and interpret plans, blueprints and related specifications. Skill in the use and care of machinery, materials, equipment and tools such as computerized maintenance systems. Crane Safe Certification, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) Certification, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate (TDG),



and Traffic Control Certification and Fall Protection Certification are considered assets. Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, is required; Class 3 with Air Brake Endorsement (for operation of road marking equipment) is an asset. Flexibility to respond to emergency calls during off-shift hours when “on-call” and work overtime evenings and weekends as required.
