Blue HDD Utilities & Excavating Inc. is seeking an experienced Hydro-Vac Operator to join our team. This is a unionized position governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of hydro-vac excavation equipment in support of utility construction and infrastructure projects. This role requires regular travel, occasional overnight stays, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, field-based environment while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, productivity, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

- Safely operate hydro-vac equipment for non-destructive excavation around underground utilities and critical infrastructure.
- Operate and maintain high-pressure water and vacuum systems in accordance with manufacturer specifications and safe work practices.
- Expose underground utilities using approved excavation methods while protecting existing infrastructure.
- Safely transport equipment, tools, and materials to and from job sites.
- Complete daily pre-trip, en-route, post-trip, and walk-around inspections.
- Perform routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance.
- Complete driver logbooks, vehicle inspection reports, maintenance records, and incident or accident reports as required.
- Ensure compliance with Ontario MTO regulations, CVOR requirements, and company policies.
- Work closely with field crews, supervisors, utility owners, and site personnel to support project execution.
- Assist with general construction and restoration activities as required.




- Identify equipment concerns and communicate maintenance requirements to supervisors and service providers.
- Participate in daily tailboard meetings, hazard assessments, and safety inspections.
- Ensure compliance with all site-specific rules, regulations, permits, and safety requirements.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining communication with supervisors and project teams.

Qualifications & Requirements

- Minimum 3 years of experience operating hydro-vac, vacuum truck, or similar commercial equipment.
- Experience working safely around existing underground utilities.
- Valid DZ Driver's Licence with a clean driver's abstract.
- Clean driving record with no serious Highway Traffic Act offences within the past three years.
- Working knowledge of Ontario CVOR regulations and commercial vehicle requirements.
- Robust verbal communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment as required.
- Strong commitment to workplace health and safety.
- Willingness to complete all company, client, union, and legislatively required training.

Preferred Certifications (Assets)

- Electrical Awareness Training Certification.
- Standard First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Book 7 Traffic Control Certification.
- Ground Disturbance Certification.




- Confined Space Awareness Training.
- Experience supporting horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and utility construction operations.
- Additional utility construction, equipment operation, or safety-related certifications.

Working Conditions

- Full-time position.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Frequent travel to various job sites throughout Ontario and surrounding areas as required.
- Overnight travel and hotel accommodations may be required depending on project location and operational needs.
- Overtime, weekend work, and extended work hours may be required based on project schedules.
- Physically demanding work involving lifting, walking, climbing, and working around heavy equipment.

Union Compensation

This position is compensated in accordance with the applicable IUOE Local 793 Collective Agreement and includes access to negotiated wage rates, pension contributions, benefits, training opportunities, and other entitlements as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
