Senior Customs Rater / Customs Clearance Specialist
Location: Brampton, ON L6T 4H2
Job Type: Full-time
Salary: CAD $65,000–$70,000 per year
Schedule: Monday to Friday
About the Position
We are looking for an experienced Senior Customs Rater / Customs Clearance Specialist to join our team.
The ideal candidate has solid hands-on experience in Canadian customs brokerage, import clearance, HS tariff classification, customs valuation, SIMA, CARM/CAD, RPP, and customs compliance.
This is a hands-on senior-level position for someone who can independently manage Canadian import entries, make accurate classification and valuation decisions, and resolve complex customs issues.
This is not a data-entry or documentation-only position.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently handle Canadian import customs clearance and accounting transactions
- Review Commercial Invoices, Packing Lists, Bills of Lading, Arrival Notices, and other customs documentation
- Determine accurate HS tariff classifications based on product composition, function, construction, and intended use
- Calculate customs duties, GST, and other applicable import charges
- Prepare, review, and process customs transactions through CARM / CAD
- Verify importer BN/RM accounts, CARM registration, RPP, financial security, and broker delegation
- Identify products potentially subject to SIMA anti-dumping and countervailing duties
- Review customs valuation, country of origin, and tariff treatment
- Handle CBSA examinations, document requests, corrections, reassessments, and clearance exceptions
- Communicate with customers, CBSA, carriers, freight forwarders, warehouses, and internal operations teams
- Conduct pre-clearance compliance reviews for high-risk or complex commodities
- Maintain accurate customs records and supporting documentation
- Assist in developing and improving internal customs clearance SOPs and compliance procedures
- Provide guidance and training to Junior Customs Clerks and Customs Coordinators
Qualifications
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on Canadian customs brokerage or import clearance experience
- Previous experience as a Customs Rater, Customs Specialist, Senior Customs Coordinator, or similar role
- Strong knowledge of Canadian HS tariff classification
- Good understanding of the Canadian Customs Tariff, MFN tariff treatment, customs duties, GST, and other import taxes
- Hands-on experience with CBSA, CARM, CAD, and RPP
- Knowledge of Customs Valuation, Country of Origin, and Tariff Treatment
- Experience with HS Classification, SIMA, Customs Valuation, CARM/CAD, RPP, Duty & GST, CFIA/PGA, CBSA Examinations, and Customs Compliance
- Experience with ocean FCL/LCL, air freight, and cross-border truck shipments is an asset
- Ability to identify potential compliance issues involving product descriptions, HS codes, declared values, and supporting documentation
- Strong English reading, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to research and interpret CBSA Customs Tariff provisions, D-Memoranda, SIMA measures, and applicable government regulations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, email, and customs brokerage software
- CCS (Certified Customs Specialist) or CTCS designation is strongly preferred
- Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
