We are looking for a patient, positive, and engaging tutor/mentor to work one-on-one with an 18-year old young man who is currently not in school and did not complete high school.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and understands that learning doesn’t always happen best in a traditional classroom.

The focus of the role will be on building foundational skills-particularly reading, writing, comprehension, and practical literacy- while also helping the youth develop confidence, independence, & a more positive relationship with learning.

The right person will be someone who can build a genuine connection with him, meet him where he is, and find creative ways to make learning relevant and interesting. We are looking for someone who can be a supportive mentor as well as a tutor, rather than someone who simply follows a textbook or traditional lesson plan.

WHAT YOU‘LL DO

- Work one-on-one with the youth for approximately 2-3 hours per session.
- Help develop basic reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.
- Use practical, age appropriate activities to make learning relevant to everyday life.
- Find creative ways to incorporate his interests into learning.
- Adapt lessons and activities to his pace, abilities, and, interests.
- Build trust and a positive working relationship.
- Encourage confidence, independence, communication, and life skills.
- Provide structure while keeping sessions relaxed, positive, and engaging.
- Help him experience success and recognize his own progress.
- Communicate with the family about progress, challenges,



and areas where additional support may be helpful.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The ideal candidate is someone who is patient, warm, resourceful, and genuinely enjoys working with youth.

You don’t need to have all the answers. We’re looking for someone who is willing to get to know the youth, understand how he learns best, and adjust their approach accordingly.

Experience with young people who have struggled in traditional school environments would be particularly valuable.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred candidates will have:

- Experience working with youth or young adults.
- Experience working with youth who are disengaged from school or considered “at risk”
- Experience supporting individuals with cognitive, developmental, or learning differences.
- Experience as a tutor, mentor, educational assistant, youth worker or similar role.
- A university or college degree in Education, Social Work, Child & Youth Care, Psychology, or another related field, or be currently enrolled in a related program.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, flexibility, and a good sense of humor.

We are open to candidates with different education and skilled backgrounds if they have the right experience and approach.

- Is comfortable working with someone who may initially be reluctant about tutoring or formal learning.

- Is independent and able to commit to a consistent schedule.
- Enjoys finding unconventional and practical ways to teach.

SCHEDULE & LOCATION

Approximately 2-3 hours per day, 3-5 days per week. We are adaptable about the specific days and times.

The position is based in the Creemore/Collingwood area, so candidates should either live locally or be within a reasonable commuting distance.

* A reliable vehicle is required.
