Overview
The Health and Safety Coordinator owns day-to-day safety performance at a Richmond Hill Industrial Facility, working under the direction of the HR Manager. This is a hands-on, floor-facing role responsible for keeping the site compliant with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act while building a genuine safety culture, not just paperwork. The coordinator leads inspections and incident investigations, runs the Joint Health and Safety Committee, and is the plant's day-to-day point of contact for the Ministry of Labour, WSIB, and safety-related customer or insurer inquiries.

Duties

Program Development & Compliance

- Own the plant's health and safety program end to end, keeping policies and procedures current with the Ontario OHSA, Regulation 851 (Industrial Establishments), and WHMIS 2015.
- Track changes in applicable health, safety, and environmental legislation and translate them into concrete changes on the floor.

Workplace Inspections & Risk Assessment

- Conduct regular inspections, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments across melting, pouring, molding, finishing, and material handling areas.
- Identify and drive corrective and preventive action on hazards specific to foundry operations — molten metal handling, dust and silica exposure, noise, heat stress, and ergonomics.

Incident Investigation & Reporting

- Lead root-cause investigations for incidents, accidents, and near-misses, and drive corrective actions to verified closure rather than just documenting them.
- Report to WSIB and the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD) as required, and act as the plant's primary contact during MOL site visits.

JHSC Coordination

- Coordinate and support the Joint Health and Safety Committee — scheduling meetings,

tracking action items to closure, and ensuring certified members are trained per O. Reg. 297.

Training & Orientation

- Develop and deliver health and safety training: WHMIS, lockout/tagout, PPE use, confined space entry, forklift and overhead crane operation, and hot work procedures.
- Run health and safety orientation for every recent employee and contractor before they get floor access.

Documentation & Claims Management

- Maintain training records, the SDS library, inspection logs, and JHSC minutes in a state that would withstand an audit.
- Support WSIB claims management and the plant's return-to-work / modified duties program.

Emergency Preparedness

- Own emergency preparedness planning — fire drills, spill response, and evacuation procedures — and keep them current and tested.

Requirements

- Demonstrated, hands-on experience running incident investigations and workplace inspections, with a track record of turning investigations into corrective actions that actually close.
- 2–4 years of health and safety experience in an industrial or manufacturing setting, with working knowledge of the Ontario OHSA, WSIA, and WHMIS 2015.
- Certified JHSC member, or willing to obtain certification within an agreed timeframe.
- Strong investigative, analytical, and report-writing skills.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence safety behaviour at every level of the plant, from the floor to the leadership team.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; comfortable maintaining structured records and metrics.
