About the Role: The Maintenance Personnel is responsible for ensuring that all buildings, grounds, infrastructure, and operational systems at the Métis Outdoor Centre in Burk’s Falls, Ontario, remain safe, clean, functional, and welcoming year‑round. Reporting to the Supervisor, Metis Outdoor Centre, this position supports the overall operation of the Centre by performing preventative maintenance, custodial services, groundskeeping, minor repairs, and routine monitoring of essential infrastructure, including the drinking water system, septic systems, HVAC equipment, plumbing, electrical components, vehicles, and maintenance equipment.

The Maintenance Personnel contributes directly to the Centre’s readiness for programming and community use by upholding high standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and regulatory compliance. The successful candidate is organized, mechanically inclined, and able to respond effectively to both routine maintenance needs and urgent situations within a rural camp environment.

What you will be doing: Perform scheduled maintenance on buildings, equipment, and infrastructure to ensure safe and reliable operation. Address immediate cleaning needs and custodial concerns to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.

Complete minor building repairs, including drywall patching, painting, carpentry, plumbing fixes, basic electrical work (switches, outlets, fixtures), and door hardware replacement.

Identify issues in HVAC systems and coordinate repairs with qualified contractors as needed.

Monitor building systems to ensure continuous functionality and identify issues early.

Participate in annual deep cleaning of all camp facilities.

Maintain accurate inventory of tools, supplies, and maintenance equipment.

Maintain camp grounds year‑round, including grass cutting, trimming, landscaping, tree and brush management, trail upkeep, garbage removal, and recycling.

Perform snow removal, salting, sanding, and ice management to ensure safe access to all areas.

Conduct regular inspections of buildings, roads, trails, parking areas, docks, and recreational spaces.

Identify and report maintenance needs before failures occur.

Operate and maintain the camp’s Small Drinking Water System in compliance with Ontario regulations.

Maintain all required Ministry certifications as a condition of employment.





Conduct water quality testing and complete all required documentation.

Ensure septic systems function properly and report issues promptly.

Maintain generators, pumps, lighting systems, and mechanical equipment.

Operate tractors, lawn mowers, utility vehicles, snow removal equipment, generators, power tools, maintenance equipment, and boats safely and responsibly.

Conduct regular inspections of all equipment and vehicles.

Identify mechanical concerns early to prevent major failures.

Serve as a secondary on‑site contact during inspections.

Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation and standards, including: Occupational Health & Safety Act; Ontario Fire Code; Electrical Safety Authority requirements; Ontario Building Code (as applicable); Safe Drinking Water regulations; and Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

Receive and document deliveries to the camp.

Complete maintenance logs, inspection records, water system documentation, and work orders.

Communicate maintenance concerns to the Maintenance Custodian promptly.

Interact respectfully with staff, visitors, contractors, inspectors, and community partners.

Read and follow manuals, blueprints, and written instructions.

Respond to facility emergencies outside regular working hours as part of an on‑call rotation.

Participate in emergency preparedness and response planning.

Assist in resolving infrastructure failures, weather‑related events, equipment breakdowns, and other urgent operational issues.

Promotes the values of the organization within the workplace and in the community by demonstrating positive and professional relationships with others (employees, citizens, council, volunteers, advocates, etc.)

Reports all unsafe conditions, hazards or practices, accidents and incidents in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and adheres to all Health and Safety requirements within the MNO’s policies and procedures and provincial legislation.

Performs other job/branch-related duties as required.

Qualifications:



High school diploma or equivalent.

3 to 5 years of experience

Minimum two years performing property maintenance, including work with small drinking water systems; required certifications must be held or obtained within the specified timeframe.

Knowledge of commercial septic systems and ability to identify operational concerns.

Knowledge of the Ontario Fire Code as it applies to facility operations.

Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code, specifically plumbing‑related components relevant to camp infrastructure.

Knowledge of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and familiarity with Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) requirements.

Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and protected work practices in maintenance environments.

Knowledge of AODA requirements related to accessibility in facility and grounds operations.

At least two years of experience with painting and general repairs, including surface preparation and finishing.

Experience working safely with cleaning agents and chemicals used in building operations.

Ability to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic, rural camp environment.Demonstrated ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing operational needs, and expand technical knowledge over time.

Building systems knowledge, including basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical components, HVAC troubleshooting, and general repair techniques.

Tool and equipment proficiency with power tools, lawn and snow equipment, tractors, and maintenance machinery.

Commitment to Métis service and willingness to uphold Métis rights, culture, and community values in daily work.

Valid driver’s licence and reliable transportation.

Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) or willingness to obtain.

Organizational skills with the ability to manage competing demands and shifting priorities.

Communication skills, both written and verbal, suitable for interacting with staff, contractors, inspectors, and community members.

Computer literacy sufficient for recordkeeping, documentation, and communication.

Physical capability to perform lifting, climbing, prolonged standing, and work in varied weather conditions.

Independent problem‑solving with demonstrated ability to assess situations and take appropriate action.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
