Overview
Reporting to the University Archivist, the Archives Technician works with students, visitors, researchers, and archival records to support access and use of the Archives’ collections. The Archives Technician provides support to people doing research in person and remotely, including through digitization work; they also perform significant amounts of archival arrangement and description. Working in the Archives, you will develop a rich understanding of university and regional history, and have the opportunity to share that knowledge through exhibits, social media, and tours and in-class sessions. As part of the Lakehead University Library system, you will also have opportunities to support cross-Library projects.
Responsibilities
- Process archival records and collections through appraisal, arrangement, description, metadata creation, and preservation activities in accordance with archival standards. Write finding aids and descriptive material to enable better research.
- Digitize archival materials and create metadata to support digital preservation, online access, and digital exhibits.
- Provide reference and research assistance to on-site and remote users, including retrieval, reproduction, and reshelving of archival materials. Provide orientation and guidance to new researchers and assist them in identifying relevant materials.
- Support exhibits and outreach initiatives by selecting, preparing, and interpreting archival materials for physical and digital displays, tours, and events.
- Maintain archival operations through environmental monitoring, storage and location control management, professional development, and participation in library-wide projects and initiatives.
- Follow new developments in the archival field, including standards and best practices; maintain active involvement in archival or related associations and organizations.
Qualifications
- Library Technician Diploma
- Courses in archival work, experience working in archives or museums,
or another related post-secondary qualification would be an asset
- Familiarity with the Rules for Archival Description, Dublin Core, and other metadata standards
- Knowledge of or interest in the Northwestern Ontario region and its history
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and balance multiple long-term projects
- Good communication skills (in person, by phone, and by email) and writing ability
- Knowledge of library cataloguing systems (Alma) and available databases to support research
