Fred Victor Centre is currently looking for an experienced and passionate Community Cook to lead our Dunn Avenue Housing Meal Program, serving meals each week for up to 51 people each meal. The ideal candidate is passionate about good food, committed to providing nutritious, delicious, ethically sourced, culturally inspired meals in a dignified way. This candidate is all about Community and being part of the Parkdale community.

The Community Cook understands the power of food and the many positive impacts on health and social wellbeing, as well as its limitations.

The Community

Cook celebrates diverse food traditions while possessing a critical analysis of food systems. The successful candidate has strong collaborative skills balanced with an ability to contribute to a supportive environment in the kitchen for a diverse team of staff, peers and community members that enables them to develop their culinary skills in an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere.

The Community

Cook will work within a budget and continue partnerships with food donors while creating an on-budget menu, while meeting the needs of the community.

What You Will Do:

- Planning and preparing nutritionally balanced meals
- Creating and supporting a pleasant, healthy, and efficient workplace




- Providing direction and assisting in meal preparation and able to follow instructions of supervisors
- Serving the residents during meal service, and providing conflict-resolution assistance to other staff as required
- Creating and following a meal plan that includes lunch and dinner each day. Ensuring enough food for each meal, including second helpings.
- Creating meals that follow Canada’s Food Guidelines, Toronto Public Health and Fred Victor policies.
- Ensuring all meals are prepared with consideration of unique dietary requirements, sensitivities, and the needs of residents.
- Ensuring all meals have vegetarian/vegan options and are nutritious and delicious.
- Ensuring that all storage areas are kept clean and tidy, including the equipment, fridge/freezer
- Maintaining a respectful working relationship with the Food Services team and program participants
- Problem solving and communicating problems and maintenance matters to the Property Services team, colleagues and Management.
- Attending meetings and trainings
- Providing polite, responsive, and welcoming customer service
- Providing leadership and direction to staff
- Prepare culturally relevant foods, foods for celebrations and holidays
- Adhere to budgetary constraints and plan accordingly
- Wash and sanitize dishes and all cookware
- Organize and store all items properly
- Complete inventory, ordering, serving and maintenance
- Date and label foods, discard expired food, prepare ingredients, prepare saved meals and bagged lunches.
- Thoroughly clean kitchen area, all appliances, underneath counters, shelving, sanitizing sinks
- Adhering and participating in the departmental standards of cleanliness
- Other duties as assigned by the Management team

What You Bring to the Team:

- 5 years’ experience with large scale food preparation within a skilled kitchen setting.
- Experience working in a Social Purpose Enterprise, peer training facility, community kitchen is an asset.
- Diploma or degree in a related field of study (culinary, nutrition, social work) an asset.




- Demonstrated ability to plan and prepare healthy, delicious, culturally diverse meals for 51 people daily.
- Experience with budgeting, sourcing food, and working with suppliers.
- Experience in diverse, low-income community setting an asset.

- Experience with community / social services sector through work or volunteer experience an asset.

Compensation and Benefits:

- For the Community Cook, Fred Victor offers an hourly rate of $29.40.
- 7% vacation pay
