Position Overview.
CDEV is seeking a practical, detail-oriented Compliance Officer to join its Legal function, reporting to the Executive Vice President, General Counsel.
The Compliance
Officer will be responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and ongoing management of CDEV’s compliance program, including serving as Compliance Officer for several CDEV subsidiaries, and helping ensure the organization operates in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, internal policies, contractual obligations, and industry standards.
The successful candidate will work closely with Legal and cross-functional business teams to identify compliance risks, translate regulatory requirements into practical business processes, and build a strong culture of accountability and compliance across CDEV.
The selected candidate will be based in Toronto, currently with a hybrid work option
Responsibilities
Compliance Program Management
- Support the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of CDEV’s compliance framework, policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of applicable compliance obligations and help ensure appropriate controls and processes are in place.
- Monitor compliance with internal policies, regulatory requirements, contractual commitments, and established company standards.
- Conduct periodic compliance reviews, risk assessments, and control testing, and recommend corrective actions where required.
- Track identified compliance issues and remediation plans through to completion.
Regulatory & Legal Compliance
- Work closely with the Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Legal team to monitor relevant legislative, regulatory, and industry developments and assess their impact on CDEV.
- Assist in interpreting new or changing compliance requirements and translating them into actionable business requirements.
- Support regulatory filings, certifications, reporting, audits, examinations, and information requests, where applicable.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and records to demonstrate CDEV’s compliance activities.
Policies, Controls & Governance
- Draft, review, and maintain policies, standards, procedures, and guidance and support policy implementation.
- Partner with business owners to establish effective controls and ensure compliance requirements are embedded into operational processes.
- Support governance processes, including preparation of compliance reports, dashboards, risk summaries, and materials for senior management or relevant committees.
- Help establish clear ownership and accountability for compliance obligations throughout the organization.
Monitoring, Investigations & Issue Management
- Develop and conduct risk-based compliance monitoring and testing.
- Review potential compliance incidents, complaints, or policy violations and coordinate with relevant internal stakeholders as appropriate.
- Support internal and external audits, investigations and examinations.
- Document findings, identify root causes, and recommend corrective and preventative measures.
Training & Compliance Culture
- Develop and deliver compliance training and awareness initiatives for employees.
- Provide practical guidance to employees and business teams on compliance policies and requirements.
- Help foster a culture in which employees understand their compliance responsibilities and feel comfortable escalating potential concerns.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in law, business, finance, accounting, risk management, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in compliance, legal operations, risk, internal audit, regulatory affairs, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of Crown Corporations or public sector would be considered an asset.
- Experience working within or closely alongside an in-house Legal team is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of compliance program fundamentals, including risk assessment, policies and procedures, monitoring, controls, investigations, training, and remediation.
- Ability to interpret legal and regulatory requirements and translate them into clear, practical business processes.
- Certification in compliance (CCEP-I, CRMA, ICD.D) would be considered an asset.
- Strong analytical, investigative, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both legal and non-legal stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- High degree of integrity, sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when handling confidential or sensitive matters.
- Experience developing or scaling compliance programs in a growing or evolving organization would be considered an asset.
