Overview

We’re looking for a creative, compassionate, and enthusiastic Cooking Instructor to lead engaging cooking activities for children, teens, and adults with special needs at the Friendship Circle.

The ideal candidate does not need to be a professional chef but should be comfortable in the kitchen, have a good understanding of cooking and basic food preparation, and feel confident leading a group through simple, enjoyable recipes.

In this role, you’ll create a fun, inclusive environment where participants can learn practical cooking skills, build confidence and independence, work together, and enjoy the experience of preparing food.

Duties

Plan and lead fun, interactive cooking activities and lessons tailored to participants with special needs.

- Select and prepare simple, accessible recipes that are appropriate for a range of ages and abilities
- Teach basic cooking skills, food preparation, kitchen safety, and cleanup
- Demonstrate cooking techniques and guide participants through recipes step-by-step
- Adapt recipes, instructions, and activities to accommodate different abilities, communication styles, and comfort levels
- Encourage participants to take an active role in preparing food and developing greater independence in the kitchen
- Foster a positive, supportive environment that encourages teamwork, communication, and social interaction




- Assist participants with kitchen tasks while promoting independence and confidence
- Maintain a clean, organized, and protected cooking environment
- Work collaboratively with Friendship Circle staff and volunteers

Qualifications

- Comfortable and confident cooking in a kitchen; professional culinary experience is not required
- Good understanding of basic cooking, food preparation, and kitchen safety
- Comfortable leading a group and explaining cooking steps in a clear, patient, and encouraging way
- Creative and enthusiastic about making cooking fun and engaging
- Ability to adapt activities and instructions for individuals with diverse abilities and learning needs
- Strong communication, patience, organization, and teamwork skills
- Experience working with children and/or adults with special needs is an asset
- Prior experience teaching, tutoring, facilitating activities, recreation, or caregiving is a plus but not required
