About The Role The Lead Data Engineer at McKesson is a senior individual contributor within the Decision Intelligence organization, responsible for leading the design, development, and operationalization of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the PSaS Business Unit. This role combines technical expertise with leadership qualities, acting as a technical leader and player coach. The successful candidate will be deeply involved in hands-on engineering while providing mentorship, solution leadership, and influencing cross-functional teams.
In this role, you will oversee end-to-end technical delivery for complex data initiatives, design and build reliable batch and real-time data pipelines, and collaborate with enterprise architects and data stakeholders to influence architecture decisions. You will define and uphold best practices, ensure the quality and performance of data products, and enable advanced analytics and machine learning use cases. Your expertise will help drive automation, reusability, and operational stability across data engineering solutions, supporting McKesson’s strategic goals of delivering impactful healthcare insights.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will have recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments,
with a strong ability to independently lead complex initiatives. Proven experience influencing technical direction and mentoring other engineers without formal management responsibilities is essential. A deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT processes, and large-scale data processing is required.
Excellent stakeholder communication and collaboration skills are also vital for success in this role.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical standards.
- Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise.
- Design and develop scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems, ensuring data integrity and performance.
- Collaborate with Data Architects and enterprise teams to influence and define architectural solutions that support business needs.
- Establish and enforce engineering standards, patterns, and best practices aligned with enterprise data strategy and governance policies.
- Mentor and review the work of data engineers, providing technical coaching and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Ensure data products are of high quality, reliable, and maintainable, with a focus on performance and long-term sustainability.
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate analytical requirements into scalable, efficient data solutions.
- Promote an automation-first mindset,
emphasizing reusability and operational efficiency in data engineering solutions.
- Oversee testing strategies, production readiness, observability, and operational stability of data pipelines, proactively addressing issues.
- Identify technical debt and lead efforts to remediate and optimize existing data systems.
- Support advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives through optimized data models and pipelines.
- Communicate complex technical designs, trade-offs, risks, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders at all levels.

Compensation is determined based on factors such as experience, skills, performance, and market conditions, with a pay range for this role between $122,100 and $162,800. In addition to base salary, employees may be eligible for annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and other benefits.
