About The Role The Lead Data Engineer is a senior individual contributor within McKesson's Decision Intelligence organization, responsible for leading the design, delivery, and operationalization of scalable data engineering and analytics solutions across the PSaS Business Unit. This role combines deep technical expertise with leadership qualities, serving as a player-coach, providing mentorship, and influencing cross-functional teams.
The ideal candidate will be instrumental in building robust data pipelines, shaping architectural decisions, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality data products that enable advanced analytics and machine learning initiatives.
In this position, you will collaborate closely with Data Architects, Data Scientists, Analysts, Product Managers, and Business Stakeholders to translate complex analytical requirements into scalable, reliable, and efficient data solutions. You will also drive automation, promote best practices, and ensure operational excellence of data pipelines, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the team.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a recognized expertise in data engineering and analytics within large enterprise environments, with a minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience.
They should demonstrate the ability to independently lead complex technical initiatives with minimal oversight, influencing technical directions and mentoring other engineers without formal management responsibilities.
A deep understanding of data architecture, ETL/ELT patterns, and large-scale data processing is essential. Strong stakeholder communication and collaboration skills are required to effectively liaise with cross-functional teams and business units.
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end technical delivery for complex data engineering initiatives or domains, ensuring timely and efficient execution.
- Serve as a senior technical point of contact for data engineering within cross-functional squads, providing guidance and expertise.
- Design and develop scalable, reliable batch and real-time data pipelines across internal and external systems to support analytics and operational needs.
- Influence architectural decisions and collaborate with Data Architects and enterprise teams to establish best practices and standards.
- Define, implement, and uphold engineering standards, patterns, and best practices aligned with the enterprise data strategy.
- Mentor and review the work of data engineers, providing technical coaching, conducting code reviews, and fostering a culture of continuous learning.
- Ensure the quality, reliability, performance, and maintainability of data products through rigorous testing, monitoring, and operational practices.
- Partner with Product Managers, Data Scientists, Analysts, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable data solutions.
- Promote automation and reusability in data engineering solutions to enhance efficiency and reduce technical debt.
- Oversee testing strategies, production readiness, observability, and operational stability of data pipelines.
- Identify and address technical debt proactively, leading remediation efforts to ensure data infrastructure remains robust and scalable.
- Support advanced analytics and machine learning use cases by optimizing data models and pipelines for performance and scalability.
- Communicate complex technical designs, trade-offs, risks, and outcomes clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
