The Opportunity
Come help build the next generation of Canadian Business.
We're looking for an ambitious journalist and creator who is curious about the people, companies and ideas changing how Canada does business, and wants to find compelling new ways to tell those stories. You'll report and write stories, interview fascinating people, develop sources and help shape how Canadian Business shows up across digital, social, newsletters, video, and events.
We're especially interested in someone who thinks beyond a single format. A great idea might start as an interview or reported story, become a video or social series, spark a newsletter conversation, or turn into something we haven't tried before. You'll have room to pitch ideas, experiment with new formats and build your own areas of expertise while working alongside an experienced editorial team.
If you're early in your journalism career, ambitious about where you want to take it and excited by the opportunity to help reinvent business journalism for a new generation, we'd love to hear from you. This is an initial 4-month contract with the possibility for renewal
What You’ll Do
- Support the development of Canadian Business’s corporate membership program, including working with members to develop and edit op-eds
- Pitch, report, write and edit smart, original stories about Canadian business, entrepreneurship, money, work and the economy
- Interview entrepreneurs, executives, investors, experts and other interesting people shaping business in Canada, while developing your own network of sources
- Turn strong ideas into content across web,
newsletters, social, video and print, choosing the format that best serves the story
- Help develop and edit stories from freelance contributors and members of the Canadian Business community
- Participate in Canadian Business events and programming, including the Better Future Summit
- Work with our audience, social, video, design, marketing and events teams to experiment with new ways to tell stories and reach new audiences
What You Bring
We're less interested in checking every box than we are in finding someone with strong instincts, curiosity and ambition. Ideally, you'll bring:
- 2+ years of journalism, editorial or relevant content experience
- A portfolio that shows you can find an interesting angle, report it and tell a compelling story
- Genuine curiosity about business, entrepreneurship, technology, money, work and the people and ideas shaping Canada's economy
- Strong interviewing, research and fact-checking skills
- An understanding of how audiences discover and consume journalism across digital and social platforms
- An interest in experimenting with video, newsletters, social and emerging storytelling formats
- Strong organization, good judgment and the ability to take ownership of your work
Experience editing contributors, working with WordPress or analytics, or appearing on camera is helpful, but not essential.
How You Work
You have strong story instincts and sound editorial judgment. You’re curious about how businesses work, but equally interested in the people, ideas and forces behind them. You know how to turn complex business topics into transparent, compelling stories without flattening the nuance. You can cut through jargon and numbers to find the narrative, ask tough questions and dig beyond the obvious angle to find the evidence that makes a story stronger. You’re digitally fluent and understand what it takes to make a story work online, from how it’s packaged and presented to how audiences discover and engage with it. You’re comfortable learning new tools and formats as the digital landscape evolves,
and you’re interested not just in what readers click on, but why a story matters to them.
You’re organized and self-directed, but you also enjoy working with editors and colleagues to make the work better. You care about accuracy, fairness and originality, and you’re interested not just in what readers click on, but why a story matters to them.
