What you’ll do
- BC Hydro’s Civil Design team is looking for a Geological Engineer or Engineering Geologist or to join our Geotechnical group to support ongoing capital projects across the province.
- As a Intermediate Engineer, you work with a multi-discipline team of engineers and geoscientists to deliver cost-effective solutions for BC Hydro's operations and capital programs on existing hydroelectric facilities and dams.
- Your responsibilities include planning and coordination of site investigations, development of geological models, slope investigations and mitigation, geohazard assessments, conducting analytical engineering analyses, carrying out feasibility, preliminary and detailed level designs and preparing reports.
- You will lead the engineering work on low complexity projects and work under the technical direction of more experienced engineers on medium-to-high complexity projects.
- Work with external consultants to review and accept their work on behalf of BC Hydro in the role of owner’s engineer to ensure accuracy and achievement of project requirements and adherence to engineering good practices and standards.
- Provide work leadership to EITs and support staff.
What you bring
- A Bachelor degree in Geological Engineering or Geology recognized by Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C. (EGBC) is required. Preference will be given to those applicants with a Masters or Ph.D degree.
- You are currently registered or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer or Geologist with EGBC.
- 4+ years of Geological/Geoscience engineering experience demonstrating an ability to perform at or near the Intermediate Engineering level is preferred. Candidates with lesser experience maybe considered.
- Effective verbal and written communication and report writing skills are essential.
- The ideal candidate is open-minded and willing to take on a wide range of assignments and has a passion for understanding geoscience and its integration with engineering solutions.
- Demonstrated education, training, and experience with as many of the following key subject areas is desired:
- a. Development of geological and geomorphological models
- b. Drilling, core logging and site characterisation
- c. Investigation and evaluation of geological hazards (landslides, rockfalls, avalanches, coastal/lake erosion, flooding, tsunamis, debris flows, etc.)
- d. Geophysics - principles and engineering applications (particularly seismic methods)
- e. Rock tunnel design and inspection, rock anchor design, design of rockfall barriers and mesh
- f. Rock mechanics including rock mass quality assessment and characterisation
- g. Quaternary geology
- h. Geomorphology and geomorphological processes
- i. Bedrock geology, including structural geology

- Occasional travel to project sites in remote areas of BC may be required.
