About Volta ResearchVolta Research is a not-for-profit working to make climate solutions decisions easier to get right. We support researchers, utilities, and industry partners as they figure out what actually works, digging into the technical, environmental, social, and affordability sides of clean energy projects. Our work spans green buildings, electric vehicles, the smart grid, solar, and emissions accounting, and includes building our own tools, like Volta SNAP, an energy modelling platform used by Registered Energy Advisors across Canada.

About the roleWe're looking for an Engineer in Training to join our team and start building real expertise in energy systems, one project at a time. This is an early-career role, so we're not expecting you to walk in with all the answers. What we're looking for is a strong technical foundation, real curiosity about clean energy and buildings, and a readiness to apply what you know to real client and research work.

You'll work closely with our team to model residential buildings and energy systems, build the tools we use to analyze them, and turn data into insight that clients and researchers can actually act on. You'll have support from senior team members as you grow into the role, and plenty of room to take ownership as your confidence builds.

Here's what you'll own day to day:

- Collect, clean, and analyze large datasets, making sure the data holds up and pulling out the findings that matter.
- Develop and refine models of building energy systems and the electricity grid, supporting both research projects and client deliverables.
- Contribute to the software tools, scripts, and dashboards our team uses for data analysis and visualization.




- Write clear technical reports and communicate what you find to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Work with senior team members to turn open research questions into structured analysis you can actually run.
- Collaborate across the team, sharing what you learn and pitching in on project delivery wherever it's needed.

What we're looking for

- A bachelor's degree in a science or engineering-related field (think thermodynamics, building science, electrical systems, mechanical engineering, or civil engineering), or equivalent experience that's given you a comparable technical foundation.
- Some exposure to building energy systems, renewable energy, or the electricity grid, whether that came from coursework, a thesis, a co-op, or hands-on tinkering.
- Strong analytical and quantitative thinking. You're comfortable working through a problem methodically.
- Working proficiency in at least one programming or analysis tool, whether that's a development language like JavaScript or Node.js, a scripting language like Python or MATLAB, or advanced spreadsheet work in Excel.
- Comfort working with large datasets, from collecting and cleaning through to finding the patterns that matter.
- Strong written communication. You can document your methods clearly and lay out your findings so someone outside your project can follow them.
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada, and available to be physically present in Canada during work hours.
- Full working proficiency in English. Additional languages are a bonus.

A strong asset, though not required: a genuine interest in low-carbon technology, energy systems, or environmental sustainability.

What we offer

- 15 vacation days annually, accrued at 6% per paycheque, plus all statutory holidays.
- Volta Days: paid time off on top of vacation, including a 4-day long weekend every month from May through October, plus a full week off over winter holidays (December 24 to January 2).

- Fully remote. Work from anywhere in Canada, with regular virtual coffees and team days.
